Fake pixel art is beter tham true
Doesnt matter if you are using the tools to make games for Eniac in art the only thing that matter is having fun and i dont see the point in you keeping complicating things adding useless rules and if photoshop makes your art better its better for your game for the players and for you and if its not 'true' pixel art to the hell with the true and keep just the art
Now i sayd it

Did you make new thread on purpose? This looks like you intended to post in Pixel Art Sprite thread, but somehow created new thread instead of simple reply.

When the first "Pixel Art Game Sprite Competition" started, i was very dissapointed like you guys... I first sad something like "Pixel Art Sucks" in other words, but once i stated to work i discovered how great could this be.
All you have to do is to start working... and dont stop even if you consider that what you do looks ugly, because if you insist your drawing becomes better and better.
Even you will not become a great Pixel Artist you will learn a lot about drawing and you will have also a lot of fun.
In my opinion fake pixel art could never be beter tham true ... whatever you ment

Ok, back to normal state...
My point is:Art is about to let your mind wonder, its about to get rid of all rules, at least all the useless ones
Programers should folow a lot of rules and worry about size, optimization, organization and whatever, but to create art the only rule should be -do the way you fell god with-
I want to join the -sprite whatever competition- but i cant because of the 'this is true pixel art this is not true pixel art' stuff
In the end, for the real world, doesnt make any diference at all if you draw in paper and scan, or draw with a tablet or draw pixel by pixel or if you use just two or three colors
(well, the color stuff maybe make some diference, this would lesser the graphics)
Also, my another point is: Draw in paper is 100 times better tham draw with mouse
And you get you game done faster.

You're right, art shoulnd't have rules. However, if it's one of the rules of the competition, then you have to stick with that.
Art is art, if it looks good, it looks good. But if it uses a lot of filters etc, it's just not pixel art. Doesn't mean you shouldn't use it in a game though.
I personally prefer true pixel art, but I'm not very skilled at making it myself

I dont think DayDream creates "true pixel art". If I remember correctly he used CorelDraw which is vector art program. Still, everything he does looks fantastic and could be used in any game.

Yeas!!!!
THATS my point!You get it!!
Its not a matter of 'this is true PA, this is not', but :So its not true...but its still great and better tham the true...so why should i worry if its true or not?

Yup...
Pixel art for me is retro looking pictures, not large pictures with 1 billion colors used.... they should be small, detailed and use very few colors and look clean... which they don't when people blurr them and stuff to bring out more detail... kind off....

Well then start another competition for vector art. Or start one for bitmap art. Sheesh. Your complaint makes about as much sense as a truck owner complaining that a car race is "limited" to cars.

Its more like someone who sees other droping their ferraris and porshes to make a competition with cars made in the beggining of the past century, and them asking:Whats the point in you doing this?
And i am not complaining, in fact, i dont give a shoot.
I dont give a shoot if you want to make a competition with cars of the beginning of the century, or to see who is the best at flash 3,or who is better in make "true pixel art" graphics for 80's pcs
What i am saying is:In the real world:
1 -people who will buy or play your games dont mind if you make the art in photoshop or corel draw or draw and scan
2 -To cut resources like photoshop or corelDraw you are throwing away tools that were designed to make your art better, you will spend more time, more energy and you are getting nothing in return.Maybe just a poor art and its all.
So, till now i haven't saw no reason at all about --why-- someone who wants to be a pro should care about follow regiously the exact definition of "what is true pixel art"

Because it's fun, it's a challenge and it's a certain style of art I and many others love. And yeah, somebody entering a ferarri in a classic car race would look like a right.. erm.. obnoxious person imo :P

Yeah it's just old-school fun, fer crissakes.
But you know what? Some people have made CAREERS out of it!
Like the guy who drew the art for this site: http://www.kelloggsfunktown.com/funktown/
And here in Canada, the leading cell phone company even has animated TV commercials completely in pixel art. It's a hot fad these last couple years, so why shouldn't people get into the fun? Check out the commercials: http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=bell+mobility
(And I think you're also being short-sighted. Pixel art with few colors compresses down like crazy. That's a practical reason to use it, especially in web media. But I'd like to know who suggested we throw out Photoshop and Illustrator?)

you say that art can be whatever you want it to be. This is true, but all art has its rules, art is categorised into many different forms.
just to name a few:
-expressionism
-impressionism
-pop art
-landscape
-portrait
there's so many. Each art form has its rules, any art which follows these rules can be put into these categories. Pixel art has its own rules, you can create pixels and do anything to them, you can call this pixel art, but if so i can call editing a photo from my digital camera pixel art as well since i was editing pixels. True pixel art is referring to the method of its creation, meaning each pixel has a purpose and contributes to the overall image, pixel art is about detail and perfection not faking it.
So go ahead, create your blurred photoshop pixel creation but don't expect people to judge it as pixel art.

2D/3D Artist & Programmer
Is there an official name for "fake" pixel art? That would make the distinction easier to express. Cause it's certainly not vector art. And I like both styles btw, both "fake" and "true" hehe.

Not just me.All the revolutionary artists of the world. They not only say it, they DID it
all art has its rules, art is categorised into many different forms.
The 'rules' came AFTER the art is done, by some critic or theoric trying to find some label to what the artist has done, cos what he made cant fit in any of labels like
-expressionism
-impressionism
-pop art
-landscape
-portrait
So go ahead, create your blurred photoshop pixel creation but don't expect people to judge it as pixel art.
Like the 'blurred photoshop pixel creating' that is in HA3?
Why should anyone worry about it?First, what they judge has zero influence on the real world.Second, anyone can create any label he wants for anything he does, even if to hundreds it is a complete crap.So it is useless, no one likes it, but hey, does not matter cos its crap art!!!
Third, you know whats this looks like? This looks like a programmer view of what is it art.Maybe the only art most programmers can do.
And to see the diference betwen a programer art and a artist art in a game, is just a matter of look to HA2 and HA3
So go ahead, go try to make your little tiny thing in paint with a pallete of just four or five colors, but dont expect people to play it as they play HA3
