I was just reading through this thread and I must have missed your coment the first time I went through it... I figured I would explain a bit so that you weren't under the impression that the first orange crush peice was in the abstract when in actaulity it was in my opinion a very straight forward political peice commenting on the Veitnam conflict. The entire peice was I guess an overly simplistic interpretation of the veitnam conflict, the coporate beholden politicians, the soldiers, the ideology of stopping communism and preserving a free market (although many would say that that part of it was just a clever ruse and an attempt to keep the American public at bay since it would be unpatriotic and would threaten our very existance as a nation to allow communism to run rampant), and lastly and most blatently, the chemical "Agent Orange" which was a herbicide used in huge amounts over the vietnamese jungles to expose the vietcong who were employing guerilla warfare tactics deep in the jungles, so basically they used the agent to destroy the foliage in the jungles canopy so that the vietcong would be more easily spotted.
So maybe that put it in a little better perspective for you....
Oh yeah, and the text is from the song "Orange Crush" by REM which was I guess about the use of agent orange as well. You may have had to be old to pick up on the song reference as I'm sure it's probably not a terribly popular song now ... probably never really was all that popular.
So that's that.
