    Wireless router bleh

I just installed a wireless router (D-Link DI-624) on my broadband modem, but it's not working correctly. I've read the manual five times, even went through every possible combination of the contradicting troobleshooting advice they give on their website, to no avail.
I'm not even using wireless yet, I'm just trying to get the connection to work through the router, which means I have a cable between the modem and the router, and another one from a lan port on the router to my ethernet card. The connection actually works, it's just extremely slow and inconsistent. Do you think this could be a problem in the cables? Has anyone had this type of problem?

    thanks.
