Idea A
That's not true, 'idea B' will require you to take the best out of yourself. Because everyone uses the same shape, and can only use a predefined palette, it'll all come down on pixel skills. Because the freedom in size and shape is taken away, everyone will face the same difficulty to improve their character. That's why i thought it'd be a good idea to do.
But it'll depend on what the sest wants, if too many people don't like this then just go for 'idea A', it was just a suggestion

Myself, I like both ideas...

But, what if we keep the simple basic shape...But, allow people to modify slightly, (say we have the basic shape(s) of a body, but if someone were creating for example a superhero character, they could add a cape outline, funky boots, etc, etc...).

However, I do like the option of just a normal comp, and sticking to the theme of "zelda" style characters. Thinking about the possibilities people could create...
We've still got the option of restricting the size of the characters created. We could also say people have to create a series of views, (face forward, face right, face left, jumping...etc)...Option of animated sprites as well...

Actually, from a personal point of view, I like this one better...

I remember someone STOPPED me from making more ships and i started than to design pixel by pixel

After this a lot of subsribed NONpixels were accepted and a NONpixels ship is winning (a good one in fact but still nonpixel art)

This time we should decide more clear the conditions

(Forgive english)

Agreed, and rules that are followed.

I think part of the problem was a definition of what pixel art is.

I suppose for the next competition maybe we should use the wikipedia definition of pixel art as a guide?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_art

As to what is for the next comp, personally I'm up for anything. Something really imaginative would be nice, as I'm always up for a challange.

PS Thanks WilloughbyJackson for voting for me! I think my ship was so small no one saw it .

If the idea is to have characters to be used in one game, then idea B is much better as it gives characters which are about same size and can be used in same game. If the contest allows to make any character then separate submissions are surely so different that you cant put 2 of them into same game.

Plus, I think theme as "zelda character" is way too wide and to make 3 different directions is quite a lot of work. I would think the theme needs to be clear and simple, like "side-view hero walking" or "front view monster bursting fireballs".

^^^agreed...

so, idea B?
Thinking along the lines of the site referenced to previously in this thread...
http://www.pixeljoint.com/wee/tutorial.asp
If someone were kind enough to design a small kind of basic shape for a body...(I tried, but it looked totally shi**e!)...Then, we could all use this basic shape to create wonderful characters.
(Maybe then for the comp we say, just the character design facing forward???)...If someone in the future wanted to use a particular character in a game, they could spend some time learning, or trying to adapt the character and draw them in various other positions themselves, (face right, running, jumping, etc...)

The "zelda" character was just an idea for a theme for the comp. Being that people could create various heroes, (warriors, good wizards, etc)...Or, different villianous characters, (demons, etc). We would have sets then, for people to use in a game of this sort.

(I just kinda got an interest in that type of rpg!)...But if there's another theme, I'm all for it...

edit ::
my naff attempt at a basic body shape...
50x60 pixels

(I was never good at drawing still life people!)...

how about somthing like this..

pixel people tutorial

I think it would be great if we all did one of these...could be really usefull for a game. We could then include that tutorial to the list of entries for users to create their own sprites to go with the ones we do.

I don't think Santuria's character is too small. All characters will be small, just post one large size with it.

Enlarged by 300% and I think it looks good, nice character Santuria.

I understand everyone worried about what true pixel art is, but why not just accept anything with clean edges that wasn't generated with a 3D program? Is it because not everyone feels they have the same tools at their disposal? If so then I understand completely.

Cool thread ^ too bad most of the art is down.

Why do we need to restrict the size of the art? Why not as big or small as you want to make it? People are reasonable right. We ain't going to see a 2048x2048 pixel art monster are we?

^TRUE...!

But, I agree with tonypa's point that if we were all designing these for a game, then the sprites would have to be fairly proportional too each other, or they would look out of place...

santuria's size of the ultramarine tactical guy seems kinda the right size to me...not too big, not too small...
so how about no bigger than 40x40...?

or, normal heroes / villians no bigger than 40x40...
bosses no bigger than say 100x100...
Is everyone cool with the theme being hero characters / villains for a zelda style game?
I don't know if we need to limit the pallette at all do we?...Unless you say no more than 7 or 8 colours to be used...?
