How was this handled in other cases where politicians changed the color?

I'm not sure. I would feel the same if it were the other way around, party-wise, personally. But, I don't recall what happened the other times.

So should the democrats ask for Lieberman's donation money back?
He switched party in all but name.

If they felt disenfranchised, they should have. Lieberman always was fairly moderate. So, maybe that reflected his supporters as well and it wasn't as much of a leap for them. Not sure.
