[SHOW] Krashin' Karts (Our First Game)
Hello everyone.
After learning from tutorials and such, me and my twin brother (account Osteel on Flashkit) decided to make a game. Please take a look at it and give us some feedback! Remember this is our first game so its not that good, but we're still proud of it =P This is a two player racing game. There is no one player mode, but we might put that in later on. We just wanted to make a game that two people could play. There are some things that we couldn't do due to lack of experience but we tried our best to make the game good! Even though this is a very simple game, its very addictive! Racing against each other can get very competitive =P This game will also be on www.Carpages.ca in a few days. Well here it is, our first game "Krashin' Karts!" www.carsahoy.com/game/Menu.swf -Ostil- Last edited by Ostil; 10-14-2005 at 03:41 PM. |

As Ostil said :P
Yes, there was a point in taking the time to make this game, we work for our cousin's business carpages.ca Whilst driving home from going Go Karting, my cousin made the joke of how it would be cool to have racing game on the company website ... we soon got to work Anyways, give us your feed back

Ok, not a bad game, heres my c+c
Graphics - overall pretty good, could be improved, but they are fine really, i like the different environments and scenery bits ![]() Gameplay - a couple of points to make here. 1) the player shouldnt get the feeling that the edges of the road are made from rubber :P, the collision isnt bad, but the reaction could use a little work. 2) there should be collision between the cars. 3) drive backwards a little way and then drive forwards across the start line and it increases a lap. I can see you are using check points, but you need to have more than one (or have 1 exactly half way through the track). Sound - the only sound i could find was on the menu, so you might wanna add some more ![]() Overall - Really not bad, and for a first game its pretty good, just fix those points above, and add a 1 player mode and you have yourself a great game .Keep up the flashing ![]() Ali |

Hehe thanks! ************************************************** ******** Graphics - Were not really artists so I think thats pretty good start actaully =D Gameplay - 1) Good idea about the rubbery edges, we'll try to get that fixed up! 2) I think collision between cars would get too frustrating, but many have suggested it so I suppose we can throw that in =P 3)We used 2 checkpoints around the track. I thought my brother had those all fixed up. I guess I was wrong hehe. Thanks for pointing it out =D Sound- Yea...we were kinda of eager to finish this game so we sorta forgot to put sound effects haha. We'll put some in for sure! Thanks again for your feedback, it'll make our game better! =D -Ostil- [Edit : Yes I just signed as Ostil because of the sole reason of the autolog ... I was accidently on my brothers account haha] Last edited by Osteel; 10-14-2005 at 07:00 PM. |

Not bad at all guys.
You sure have proven to us that you do indeed know how to make a pretty decent game. Before clicking on the link I was expecting a racing game like the one you have, but with horrible graphics probably done in 10 minutes or something, but no, I was wrong. For a first game you guys sure did spend time on the graphics aspect (which is a good thing). The game engine was nicely done too, I imagine you guys have already built programs in other languages right? I will say though that the gameplay was not that exciting for me, but now that we know that you guys are serious developers (and not just a bunch of kids with silly dreams), I can honestly believe you guys can pull off a more sophisticated game. Suggestions: For the snow level, how are you moving the snowballs? My computer slows down alot on that course, due to the falling balls. You should try scrolling them all as one huge movie clip rather than seperate movie clips. Nice work so far. |

good game
![]() i suggest that you have an option that lets the computer play against you, instead of making you play against someone else. also, it gets kinda boring after awhile. but maybe that's just me, since i don't like racing games. maybe you could add powerups or something like that. |

Thanks alot! ![]() To tell you the truth, this racing game was the first serious game we have ever made. Sure we have made simple games in programming class such as tic tac toe or hangman, but nothing to this extreme As to answer your question about the snowflakes, it lags for me as well. The thing is, the snow fall is in one giant movieclip that loops around and around , and even though it lags, we felt it was nessessary to put something more in to fill in the space (seemed kind of empty) jesserules Thanks for the comments As you answer YOUR question about the single player, Im not sure if we could be capable of doing such a thing. Computer AI was never our specialty, and so its probably impossible for us to accomplish such a thing Anyways, sorry to hear that you didnt enjoy it , but thanks for trying it out anyways

Really nice game for a first big project.
![]() Some suggestions: 1) Make the levels harder a) Make the car harder to control (ex: skidding) b) Make collisions a little bit more damaging (after hitting the wall, make it harder to get back on track. It didn't really matter to me if I hit the walls or not because there really wasn't much penalty. The car deccelerates and accelerates so fast that slowing down around a turn is basically the same as hitting a wall. 2) Make it more competitve. Most people won't have another person beside them while on the computer. You could add a timer and have a highscore board. This will increase replay value, expecially since there is no opponent AI. Either that or record the player's best time using sharedObjects so one can attempt to better oneself. Or even better, record the "shadow" of run with the best time, and play that during the race, so the player can race against himself. That's it for now. Once again, great start =)

*Some of the tree trunks were above the car when they should be below the car. Move the tress further away from the track if you dont want to use multiple layers of trees.
*you should not be able to turn when car is stopped. At least turning should be slower. *why exactly is the grass making the car bump back? I would understand if the track would have some sort of walls around it, but if you drive on the grass it should only slow you down. |

Thanks everyone, we appreciate the comments and suggestion. It seems that one of the biggest ones is to make a one player version of the game
Does anyone have any suggestions how to make a computer controlled car?, would we just make it a movie clip thats animated as it goes around or actually have the car somewhat think for itself? Thanks again

You could have an animated car, but then it would be to repetitive. IMO the easier and smarter route to go is a.i. cars.
How would you go about building an a.i car though? First, think about what the human player thinks about when controlling a top-view car. He is usuall pressing the gas key and making sure he/she doesn't hit the curbs using the right and left keys. So base the a.i. algorithm on that assumption. Enable the a.i. to detect the curbs and thus letting it decide which direction to turn to avoid hitting the curbs. Because a.i. calculate distances and math operations very quickly compared to the human brain, they will most likely drive perfectly. So take advantage of the fact that the a.i. is using the pc processor and don't be afraid to give it complex calculations. |
