trouble with flash site menus

I'm working on a flash site, first one ever. I've been working really hard and have made a bit of progress.

I'm having trouble with my animated menus though. The animations are triggered by button mouse rollovers, then it rewinds the clip when you rollout of said button.

If you rollout of the button before the clip finishes it causes wierd problems, (like the rollover and rollout are reversed, it plays on rollout and rewinds on rollover) It won't rewind in the middle of playing the clip if I roll out, and all the clips end up playing on top of one and other.

I'm applying the actions directly to the buttons, and I've heard this may not be the best way to do it.

I guess what I'm asking is whats a better way to go about doing animated menus like this. I've looked for tutorials and such, but the ones that do what need are for MX2004 pro, and I've got '04 Ed.Ed.

Can someone tell me if I'm going in the right direction, and there's just some AS tweaks I need to make, or if I need to reapproach. If I do need to reapproach, what would be the best way to go about it?

You sure have overcomplicated things here, Id go back to basics and think of a simpler solution.

care to elaborate?

I know thats how I want the menu's to function. I'm not really prepaired to settle for something different or less complicated. Thats part of the learning process, pushing myself with a project thats just outside my grasp. I don't think anything is overly complicated about what I'm trying to do, just that I may be goin about it the wrong way.

Which areas have I over complicated? Which area's could I simplify and maintain the same functionality?
