[CS4] simple 3d example using GPU
Just something I knocked together after just 2 minutes of playing with CS4 for the first time today! Very simple to get 3D planes being transformed and I really like the way that the 3D seems to be handled in the IDE... Not sure I'll use the IDE too much though these days, but still I like it!

Yes we can
Its a fun little sample, i like it. Though yeah,i wouldn´t suggest saying things like "using GPU" when talking about flash stuff because by now its pretty obvious to most that the GPU support in the flash player is so limited that its a shame of Adobe to even just talk about it as if it was a great addition and by hyping one´s own suff with such statements one is only supporting em in their false marketing push and probably most people expct more than rotating and skewed planes when talking about gpu supported content so it has a fishy taste to it and gives content a disappointing touch it doesn´t deserve by itself.
But yeah, just my view on it

wow.. thorough analysis for a simple 3d example using GPU ( as described to not be too much of a let down I hope :| )!

Yes we can
no worries, as i said, no problem with your example, i like it, more a problem with Adobe´s mentality of overhyping everything which makes the result more disappointing than it would have to be.

Yeah, this is the first time I'm looking at it and it really doesn't appear to be what I though it would be! I thought I'd be looking at dirextX or OpenGL libraries and this doesn't seem to be the case at all
I agree, this now does seem more disappointing than what I had imagined and hoped for.

Well, they have to start somewhere and adding a z property and being able to move/rotate planes around is better than nothing. The problem with Adobe is that this functionality isn´t using any more of the gpu features than most other usual 2D rendering, whereas yeah, when they hype gpu support one would expect way more functionality or at least way better performance for the same functionality.
Also due to the way they do the 3d stuff it leads to worse graphical results in various scenarios than a handmade implementation by the developer, have a look at this:
http://www.bit-101.com/blog/?p=1682 and other posts in recent times on bit and elsewhere on the topic.
Much nicer than Adobe´s implementation in comparison is something like the open source 3d engines and for vector stuff things like vectorvision:
http://code.google.com/p/vectorvision/
(which is about handling vector stuff nicely in papervision and while it was an offspring project it will soon become merged into pv3d as the dude making it recently joined the pv3d team).
So yeah, let´s just say we take Adobe´s thing for what it is (moving and rotating some planes arund in 3d, not even with a camera implementation, ordering, backface culling etc etc out of the box and yeah,no usage of the gpu for anything on that end really) and not take their hypewords omg 3D 3D ,gpu support, hooray! cause yeah, its far from a satisfying solution if one expects their hype slogans to be true.
