Hi guys. Nice Mac stuf forum!!!!!!!!

Anyone knows where can i get a .avi/.mpg to .mov converter?

I tried to open .avi in QT, but nothing. Is QTPro able to open and then export .avi?

thanks

I was hoping that the free download of imovie was capable

http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11549

but it will only support importing quicktime movies, Quicktime pro boasts to import 30 movie formats, i assume that .avi is one of them. If you just looking to view an .avi then quicktime 4 or 5 should do just fine. you can view many different formats with it.

It might be that some avi's could not be seen with Quicktime because there are some .avi that i can't view with QT, imovie 2, or Final Cut.

Any idea?

I don't know the technical reasons for it, but sometimes i've found that avi's i've downloaded sometimes just won't open on a mac. I think it may be saved with an older form of avi compression that quicktime is unable to open. You might check on download.com for a different avi player for the macintosh.

Hi, I donīt have much experience with video editing and conversion, but it could be possible that if you cant open some movies in QT you are missing some special codecs. For further information:

you're right, there are some video codecs that are not available to the mac... and there are some that are just not installed from the getgo.
if you open the movie it usually says there is a problem decoding it. but you can say to continue (the qt player screen is then white) and then check in the movie info (video track -- format) to see what codec was used for the video.
if it is indeo video you can download just about all of them from apple at http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n30506
this explains things pretty well.
there are at least three codecs i know of that do not exist for the mac.
one of these is mpeg4. for this you can only watch them with the windows media player.... but if the mpeg 4 is a divx movie, then you can download the divx player http://mac.divx.st/ and you will be able to export it then as a quicktime movie with sorenson or whatever.

have fun, but don't do anything i wouldn't do.
