Progressgoesboink

the volley's in my post. if you don't see it go here:

http://pgb.web1000.com/img/arena/1st_volleyjuiceweb2.jpg

it's pretty big so it might take awhile. you could call this PS Tennis.

I just experienced the same thing you did. It wasn't in my post. My host is somewhat unreliable so I guess sometimes the image doesn't diplay. Try dragging the URL in my last post up to the address bar.

Thanks

hi pgb.
you know if i click your link i get a message page from your server saying nocando basically. but thens it lists a link to grab your image and, upon clicking that, it downloads it to fk-so it sorta works.

anyway, here's a goofy volley with about 40 ps techniques applied very haphazardly.

http://www.mindspring.com/~waco1/treesoup.jpg

if you'd like to continue, i have one request: could we work a bit smaller; like about 65% of this?

Progressgoesboink
10-15-2002, 07:23 PM
as per your request, I scaled down the image size a bit (400x600). I liked your return, but I can't for the life of me see any elements from my picture in yours. Maybe it's cuz of all the filters. Here's my return, and in case you can't see it below, I'll also put the URL here: http://pgb.web1000.com/img/arena/3rd_volley-catchphrase.jpg

I eagerly await your return=) and all comments and put-downs are welcome!

hi pgb. nice return-don't know wth to do with it at first glance.

thanks for the size accomodation.

as for the previous volley; i took a "1" and made a pattern from your original-just some leaves. anyway, i kept messin with it til i created that centerpiece thing-if you look at it's lower borders i think you'll see; 4 leaf-filled 1s at varying angles. ditto for the center of the centerpiece. it's created from a typeset asterisk, playing on your serve. i did add 2 photos; a treehugger and a logger. the sky is just all photoshop-mostly render>clouds with a gradient overlay. there's really not very much filtering that went on-mostly duping, blending, distorting, etc.

Progressgoesboink
10-15-2002, 09:44 PM
oooh. now I see. Tree hugger. And now I do see my pic=) Very clever=) I actually snapped that first pic in my backyard, and my last volley's cloud pic outside my school.

Here's my fifth volley, completed in record time. I will admit it is a bit simple, but it was the best I could come up with! Featuring my goldfish Patrice. As per usual here is the url: http://pgb.web1000.com/img/arena/5th_volley-winafish.jpg

here's the info: web1000.com is a free host that charges nothing and bandwidth is unlimited. The catch? Oh.. There's ALWAYS a catch..

Their servers are either extremely unreliable, or they switch them off every so often, just for kicks.

I suspect they just switch them off every so often because they make their money off of 404 errors. As long as your site is up, and you go to the right URL, you're in good shape. But type in the wrong URL, or, alternatively, go to the site while the server is down, and it f*cking rapes your computer=(

also, this is the only host I've found where they let you host stuff at their site and post it elsewhere (for instance here). Tripod, Angelfire, and Crosswinds don't let you do that.

It is kinda a pain in the ass when I go onto my homepage and instead of my site there's porn ads, but if that's how they have to pay the bills, so be it, as long as my parents don't walk in and get the wrong idea..=)

If someone can suggest a FREE host with no ads like mine, but doesn't use a similar ad-system/is more reliable, lemme know, but I haven't seen any.

That is kinda awkward... that type of stuff can (and has recently where I work) get people sacked...

I'll know next time to check your links from a computer where it doesn't matter ;)

Progressgoesboink

what can I say? I'm cheap! When it doesn't work (3-4 times a week) it usually just sends me to the web1000 home page. I haven't been booted to a porn site in the L O N G E S T time. still, bad times for those who are "sacked" as you UK people put it :)

cool prog. sorry if i'm being stupid, but what did you use swift for?

don't know what time zone you're in, but i'm in pacific. i'll get something back tomorrow night or monday. i've had to run around a lot the last few days.

the little ship to the right.

I made it in Flash, exported it as an EPS, imported it into Swift, and extruded it. Then I put some distorted text on the side in Fireworks=)

Good times :)

I'm in the central time zone.

hey, awesome pic.. rainbows are magically delicious.

prog, yeah i'm sorry i went dyslexic on your initials. i had it right on all the other posts. don't know what i wasn't thinking but it's all smashed into a jpg so maybe i can just make it up to you next round?

i figured 5 rounds-5posts each. let's make the finales grand. you'll learn more with a greater variety of battles as well.

no offense taken. how did you get that nifty flame-looking thing over the letters?

I might finish tomorrow evening on mine, but who knows, this is my final volley, I should probably make it count=)

i made a basic border for the 3 sides with the pen tool, saved it as a path. then i added points with beziers and just played around with the shape, selected it and filled it. then i made a mask of the layer and blurred it smooth. if you've ever seen a tutorial about making glass buttons it's basically the same technique. then i lit it up with lighting efx and i really don't remember what type of blending i did but i think it was primarily set to hard light.

I might finish tomorrow evening on mine
take whatever time you need. i'll look forward to it.

ok, finally finished. I had a lot of VERY BAD ideas, not to say this is good..but better than my others. and that's not saying much. I just have one thing to say, and that is that the music notes took FOREVER to turn white. SHEESH that was hard.

Here's the URL: http://pgb.web1000.com/img/arena/9th_volley-floor.jpg

and here's the (admittedly terrible) pic:

meanwhile, go kick someone else's ass in another battle and if you ever want to know how to do anything in photoshop i'll tell you if i can. i'll try to get the return in tonight or tomorrow.

Thank you stats, I think the notes are rough around the edges, but if that looks intentional then I'll keep it=)

i don't really know what's happening. whenever i try it, it runs a script that kicks me to http://www.web1000.com/.
but i can access your previous volley, #7.
so tell me how i can pick it up.

nevermind i guess the bad scripted one was just stuck in my browser cache. got it now.
it is cool.
did you scan the music off of a sheet? is that why you had a problem? image>adjust>selective color (set to absolute) is generally an easy way to switch colors up fast.

yeah, I sorta screen captured Mozart's Eine Klein Nachtmusik from a *pdf I downloaded and then converted it to vectors in flash, then cut out all the white on the page, then flipped the black music to hite and exported it as an *.ai and imported it into fireworks.

While it would have helped to be able to switch the colors, my real problem was painstakingly cutting out the music.

KSeeK, I seriously don't know what you're talking about=) what script?! :)

i see. you're using fireworks rather than photoshop? your route seems like a long way round but i've had the same problem with sheet music or anything printed of dubious quality. have you ever tried just importing it straight into fireworks and just dealing with it as a bitmap?

KSeeK, I seriously don't know what you're talking about=) what script?!
...more convoluted stuff. i think your site changed its policy away from the advertising it used to feed you when it was down. so, when i first tried to access your last volley, rather than getting a 404 or popups or porn or whatever, it redirected me to the web1000 home page. that's all i meant. when i accessed your older volley i realized the site was back up and that i had a version of volley 9 with the redirect script in my cache. make sense?

hey prog. i know it's not apparent but this whole thing (save for the typeset) is created from the f-hole shape on the cello or viola (?) in your last volley. i think it's called 'when jackolanterns from another planet fly through your mouth.' hope that doesn't spoil it for anyone.

http://www.mindspring.com/~waco1/jackomout.jpg

thanks for the battle mate. are you a musician as well?

Progressgoesboink
10-25-2002, 10:51 PM
actually I barely used photoshop for my last volley. I use it to draw vector type things because for some reason the rectangle drawing thing in my Photoshop is messed up.

..exported it as an *.ai and imported it into fireworks.

I slipped up (I meant to say Photoshop). I used Photoshop almost exclusively last round. I use fireworks purely because I am more comfortable in a Macromedia environment, because I learned what little image editing techniques I have in Flash, which I know is weird, because I started with vectors, and moved to bitmaps (which are bewildering).

I use a round-about way because there are certain things that one program might be able to do that another cannot. Like on my fish volley, the blue background squarish fill was done in fireworks..in fact, the whole image was done in fireworks. Photoshop just can't do that (or I don't know how) I really am at a loss as to how to fully utilize photoshop..mostly I just apply filters and stuff. Like on that Starscape one I did..that one was done almost entirely in Photoshop. I guess it just depends. Another instance is neither Fireworks or Photoshop can break a bitmap into vectors (that I know of). The only program I know that can do that is Flash, therefore I use it and hope for the best.

Anyway, which volley of mine is your favorite? I like your "Phaser Fishing" one with the Lame fish=)

Thanks for the comp!

i think i like your fish one as well. that was the funniest round.

myself, i'm much better with bitmaps than vecters. see i can't even spell vector.

just thought you might be a fellow muso due to the mozart. it's way old school, but check out the Tower of Power horn section sometime if you haven't.

the blue background squarish fill was done in fireworks
study up on patterns and blending in photoshop. it's an amazingly versatile program. the pen tool will get you into some vectors but that's not its strong point.

cya around here.
