I just read a book about checking collision using quadratic equations. instead of using hittest to check for collision which may be missed out if the sprites move too fast, the book taught antoher method using quadratic equations to check for collision. till now i still don't understand the math behind it. can anyone explain it to me

I just read a little about the method your talking about at this site:

So from what I gather, using a quadratic equation, we can find the time when two objects will collide. This is pre-collision detection. From this, we can check at that time or around it to see if the collision really is taking place. If it's taking place during or around that time, then make something happen.

I'm still digesting this myself, but I'd thought I'd help some by providing a link.
