Going to host the what I think is the very first 3D comp here. The theme is to create a 3d Mecha Robot in what ever 3D program you want. Also it has to be anime mecha.

1. Posting pic must be below 102400 bytes.
2. Must be able to submit 3d model.
3. Once competitors are gathered, one month will be alotted for competition.

Judge's will hopefully be some of the mods here. Judging will consist of two parts: Model and Presentation.

Model - The model with no textures or neat special effects will be judged. Accounts for 50% of score.

Presentation - Your loaded picture with textures and fancy stuff. Accounts for other 50%.

Cool! I'm up for it, though, my submission'll probably look more like a cardoard box than mecha. I'll try though :p

Welcome. Now that you know you have 1 month. Go ahead and get started.

Every competition needs a prize. What does the winner get? And who will judge the entries?

01-04-2003, 09:34 PM
No prize...Just fun. Judge's were written in my first post.

Isn't anyone else interested in this competition??? It'd be nice if there's people to compete with :p

01-06-2003, 03:24 AM
I don't have time to compete, but I'd be willing to be a judge.

01-06-2003, 10:44 AM
Going to leave this open for another day or two. If noone signs up then closed. Good try thou.

01-07-2003, 07:13 PM
dont loose hopw yet. Or did you already close this??

Just show me an examlpe or pic of a mech and im in! :D

01-07-2003, 08:56 PM
Good, at least one other compeditor, lol

I'll post some pics up later. Hope WMLeeBo is still interested, even if the number of participants is low.

BTW, what 3d app do you use? I use Blender (http://www.blender3d.com) . It's free! Unfortunately it only exports to a few formats (dxf, vrml 1.0, videoscape, avi, jpg), so you need a converter to get it to some apps. It's a really cool proggie though.

I use 3ds max 5 and Maya 4.5

Try the folowing links for images of mecha. There's lots more on the 'net.

Add --> http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/~fgrayson/thumbs.html - Rendered 3d mecha

Two more links to give any interested parties some ideas:

Both sites include detailed info about several mech's from different anime's. (I can't believe the detail some people put into describing them down to their every detail, lol. They have more time than I do :) )

01-11-2003, 02:45 AM
WMLeeBo, any rules on vertice counts? I hope not. I wanna make one d@mn perty mecha!

01-11-2003, 03:52 AM
I saw this idea and was realy into it...
but mech really isnt my style...
i want to learn more about 3ds, but not the battle for me.. ill judge too...

if anyone wants to attempt a ps tennis style 3d battle im game for a try!

there was a very similar battle over at somethingleet.com not too long ago... it had good turnout, as it was more of a texture & materials battle...

01-11-2003, 04:22 AM
bah. do something guys. vertice counts... just as long as it looks like a mech. I'll start working on a 1960's version of a mech perhaps ;)

dang. that means I have to start up my windows machine though...

01-11-2003, 02:25 PM
lol, I'm working on one right now. I'm not the best at 3d, so the end result'll be interesting, but I'm having fun (and learning a thing or two).

1960's? Astroboy, maybe? lol

01-11-2003, 04:57 PM

no no...that's not mine, its where I got the idea to do the mecha comp

01-13-2003, 09:54 PM
im a 3d ultra-noob, so mine will be a little simplistic :

hey WM, just got your PM

i would love to participate - but i am very busy at the moment, so if needed, i would be glad to be a judge, or just maybe a "mentor" to help out the contestants

01-18-2003, 03:13 AM
I sure wish more people were getting involved. I'll post some of my initial renderings in a couple days.

01-18-2003, 09:54 AM
I'll have a try.. but at at a 2d version. I'm no good at 3d, so i'll make a drawing just for some fun. ;)

01-18-2003, 05:21 PM
Could you make a scale drawing form the front, side, and back. I could model it. We could be a team!

01-18-2003, 07:29 PM
cool! yeah sure. I'll have something for tomorrow... perhaps one of the views:)

01-18-2003, 10:03 PM

When you do get something together send to...

01-19-2003, 01:21 AM
If you don't mind, could you send it to jack@gooeysoft.com as well. I'm having a tough time finding pics of mecha with more than one view. I'm just going from imagination at this point, which may or may not end up being a good thing :)

01-19-2003, 10:13 AM
Wait, Wait. He is MY team member. :D I guess we well see who can model the same drawing better.

01-19-2003, 05:00 PM
lol, So you get a team member and I have to go solo? lol.

<childish_ranting>Mine's gonna be better than yours Nyah Nyah!!</childish_ranting>

01-20-2003, 12:05 AM

01-20-2003, 12:11 AM
on a side note....wheres all the beautiful mecha's?...i want to see some eye candy!

01-27-2003, 12:06 PM
here's something.. perhaps a bit late!! :)

wlm, hope it helps you! if this is still going on ... which I fear not.

02-05-2003, 05:39 PM
ooh wikid!
is there room for one more?

else I'll be a judge
