3d scene composition:
each player creates a new object.
objects are then e-mailed to each other.
objects are collected for final image renderings. (all objects put together to form one scene).
emphasis on modelling and composition...(textures and mapping not much of a concern)
feel free to post pics of items as you go...

the items:

JP-Coffee Table
gs-Pencil
jp-brandy glass (empty- i think he drank it all...)
gs-dolphin trophy
jp-butt-ugly couch
gs-fork
jp-yuppie & room
gs-speaker
jp- brandy in glass/entertainment center/tv
gs-lava lamp & picture frame (markp.com's avatar)
jp-breakfast!
gs-fishbowl & treadmaster
jp-fish

Hmmm. I'd take part as long as you can post something other than just .max. I can convert to/from just about any other format, but since I don't have Max, I can't use .max files. On the other hand, I *can* use .3ds files.

Whad'ya say?

jasonpratt
01-22-2003, 01:24 AM
sounds good...
what prog do you use out of curiosity?
how shall we go about textures etc...

i have to warn you, im not too skilled at the ol' 3d...
but i'll try my best not to disapoint...

jasonpratt
01-22-2003, 01:50 AM
perhaps then we each model objects back and forth, and use them in each of our scenes within our own progs, and then do our own renderings along the way... at the end...

I'd prefer to model in max, and render with something else anyway...

I'll email you a nice little coffee table, and perhaps we can create a room etc...

Gooeysoft
01-22-2003, 02:20 AM
Hmmm. Good point about textures. Hmm. I don't know what we could do about that.

What would you suggest?

My email is:

Sorry for the long delay

jasonpratt
01-22-2003, 03:28 AM
well, not too worried about textures...
lets get some items together first.

do you have photoshop?

might be interesting to try and texture/materialize the scenes later using only ps...

just a thought...

Gooeysoft
01-22-2003, 03:28 AM
BTW, I just want to make sure I'm clear on what you're saying.

Are we going to email just the objects back and forth and arrange them at the end into seperate renderings? And as for textures, what would you suggest. I'm reading everything I can on texturing in Blender, but unfortunately, there's not much documentation on the subject. If you send textures as bmp/jpg/tga or something, I'll do my best with them, but I'm not sure what I can send you.

(Seriously, if, because of the texture prob, you would rather work with someone else, I'll completely understand. if I were in your shoes, I'd frustrate myself. If that made any sense, lol)

jasonpratt
01-22-2003, 03:42 AM
yeah that was kind of the idea... use the objects for a final scene...(each building/rendering our own "room"). I sent the "serve" over to you...

not worried too much about textures... I need to concentrate more on modelling anyhow...
man! textures and materials are like the fun part of 3d!

don't know anything about blender, but looks like the forum action for it is here:

http://www.elysiun.com/forum/

I'll send my image files along with the models, just in case you wanna play around with them...

lets just do it and not worry...
I'll post the object list at the top of the thread with more of an explaination...

Yes BTW, I do have PS

jasonpratt
01-22-2003, 03:48 AM

maight be fun to attempt the final scene that way... model it all dry and use ps to fancy it up?
good exercise anyway...

BTW, sorry for how long it's taking me. This has been a busy week. just started a new job 'n all.

EDIT: If anyone's paying attention, that's a dolphin trophy. Don't ask me why you'd need one, but it makes a great paperweight. My brother has one similar to the one I modelled

awesome! seems you're getting the hang of textures!
do you have usage of bump mappings?
every render is looking better!

lol..thats what i had for breakfast...
i actually scanned my toast to get the texture....
(didn't dare scan the eggs for obvious reasons!!!)

Gooeysoft
01-26-2003, 11:52 PM
Wow, I've been learning a LOT. This is turning out to be a good challenge. I'm trying to try different techniques and learn everything I can.

Speaking of Bump mapping, I'm reading about the technique right now.

jasonpratt
01-27-2003, 02:11 AM
also might wanna look into reading more about specular levels (and reflectivity if you have raytracing capabities). bump maps are pretty cool... ill send you the bump map for the toast if you like, or you can just greyscale the toast image, make it a bit higher contrast and add a sharpen filter to it in pshop... and use that as your bump map...

yes, this battle is teaching me some cinema 4d stuff (which i havent used before this...) really cool program. I get frustrated modelling and moving stuff around with it though...)

so for now its modelling in 3dmax, and rendering in c4d...

(im working on the volley btw, just got stumped on a couple things.. ill get it to you soon...

Gooeysoft

I made sure to remove the faces of the mesh behind the door, so you could add fire in the stove if you so desired. I may do that on my next render.

My fish didn't texture too well, but I'll keep tweaking them a bit and hopefully get it right.

Good night. See ya in the morning :)

jasonpratt
01-27-2003, 05:45 AM
cool, yeah, i had a tough time with the fish... worked gread in 3d max, but in c4d it was a royal pain... nice addition to the room...
fire.. could be tricky without using atmospherics or complex app specific materials... hmm... what to do next..

Gooeysoft
01-27-2003, 05:47 AM
At some point we're gonna have to consider whether we want to start a new room (IE: Kitchen, bedroom), something different (City? lol  ) or take a break. Our room is getting pretty full :(

jasonpratt
01-27-2003, 05:47 AM
oh, for the fish... do you have the image on both sides right now? if so, you could probably just scale the map up in size, so the black doesnt make the shape... (may be able to fix the picture up in photoshop too... i didnt bother to crop it to size or anything..

jasonpratt
01-27-2003, 05:49 AM
yeah.. i was thinking that too... it would also free up some real estate on the old machines/file size as well...

Gooeysoft
01-27-2003, 05:49 AM
Yeah, I'm thinking I'm gonna have to whip out the PS. The texture size increments in Blender are just too big. Either he has a bit of the black, or he loses his eyes :D

Gooeysoft
01-27-2003, 05:51 AM
Would you mind if after our battle is done, I put the room online in VRML?

jasonpratt

Gooeysoft
02-02-2003, 04:43 AM

BTW, do you think we should clear some of the yuppie's junk/add another floor to the house or what? It's getting cluttered in there :)

Another idea might be to start from scratch and work on a kitchen/bedroom/other room. Tell me what you think.

jasonpratt
02-02-2003, 12:59 PM
yes definatly...

jasonpratt
02-03-2003, 01:42 PM
hey gooey.. im working on the serve now... what do you say to scrapping the scene we just did, and doing the kitchen as a separate thing all together?

my scene file is getting a bit out of hand for my cpu...
plus, i kind of wanna start fresh again...(not to mention i totally messed up my lighting! :) )

Gooeysoft
02-03-2003, 03:11 PM
Hey sounds good. Should we start a new thread, or continue using this one?

jasonpratt
02-03-2003, 04:34 PM
well... i guess we should still use this one...
(it's pretty much the same battle...)
Soon i'll post the volleys and significant info in the first post for viewing ease...
seems like it would be more appropriate as far as showing our progress that way...

*I expect that the kitchen will be MUCH better, since we've figured out how to do this type of battle...

been great so far!

sorry about the big delay in the serve, I am swamped with actual "work" right now...

I'll let you know, i am designing the kitchen, and would like the actual room structure to be nicer...

I think this round we should take more time between volleys.....
yeah, I guess i want to push you into textures and materials more...
I'll concentrate on modelling more, and avoid using mats to "get away" with my poor modelling skills... i.e. the fish...

deal?

not meaning to sound weird, it's just that it seems our strong points are opposing... which is a good thing for this battle... and i think we should each emphasize our weaknesses, and perhaps offer suggestions to each other on them...

I'm learning a bit about nurbs and spline modelling... gotta get away from simple extrudes and lathes (which was 90% of my volleys this last round...)

man, if you ever break down and decide to buy some propriatary 3d prog, check out cinema 4d... (are you running linux? i dont know if its compatible w/linux...)lot cheaper than max, and renders quite nicely... I'm sure you'll be able to figure out the modelling aspect (to which i am clueless) too...

check out the demo if you get a chance... you can't save, but all the features are enabled...

i think it's www.maxon.net or www.maxon.com .

plus, the latest version outputs swf... ! :)

hey, you can always "print screen"...right?

Gooeysoft
02-03-2003, 05:28 PM
Sounds great. I like the idea of working on the weaknesses. lol, BTW, you'll notice that some of my voley's were simple lathe's as well :)

I also agree that we should spend more time.

I LOVE nurbs and splines :) Fun to work with.

I'm on Windows. When I get a larger HD, I'd like to get linux as well, but for now just plain jane 98 for me.

I might consider buying Cinema 4d when I've actually got some money. Right now, I'm dirt poor, and living with my parents. :(

I like blender, 'cuz it's free, opensource, has a large community, and it runs on just about any system (Even pda's :p ).

The only prob I see with blender is the fact that it only out/inputs a few file formats. i have a feeling that that will be fixed before long, though.

If you're talking the fish in the bowl, Jason made the fish and the texture (and I simply made the bowl with a lathe).

If you're talking the dolphin paper-weight, I mage that. Nurbs 'n such. I messed up on his forehead, though. I forgot to intesect the meshes before smoothing. Woops. Now it looks like there's a ball coming out his head. I'll fix it someday :)

jasonpratt

i really cheated on the fish alot...
i loaded the fish picture into the viewport, traced it, extrudes it.
then i scaled the segements down to give it a more rounded look, then i jsy t added a taper modifier to thin the tail.. then i uvw mapped the fish picture and scaled it to fit...( i toyed with bump map couldn't make it looke right...)

heres the image of the fish for fun...

huh? looks like they did away with attatchments here?

The tricks you did is really cool, I didnt know you could make it look so good that way, i mean it does look like the real thing, I was wondering if it was all the way 3d or just a plane with a picture.
