As a cheapskate, I am unwilling to fork out for 3D Studio max, and as this is the only 3d format that Swift 3d can import, I am looking for another (cheap) package that can export to .3ds (and preferably can import .dxf).

Does such a package exist?

Cheers

Lets make it simple for you :). . . .Lightwave 6.0 is the closest your gonna get to 3D Studio MAX R3 and about 1/3 the price.

How's this?

Stata3d is free at http://strata.com/default.html and it can save as dxf.

3d Win is shareware and available at http://www.stmuc.com/thbaier/ and will convert dxf to 3ds (brilliant)

The 3ds file can be imported into Swift, animated and exported to swf......

I downloaded a dxf model(not had time to use Strata yet), converted it to 3ds etc.... See the result at :

Yes, I would second Pope's comment.

I am working on a few projects where people started with Strata, then ran out of power. As a result, I've seen what can be done with the package.

They all rave about the ease of use of the interface. It seems that for the modeling needs of many 3D flash projects, this is a great place to start.

Good luck and have fun!

P.S. Liked the porsche

Yeah, I love Strata. Applying textures is soooo easy. But I think the modeler is so-so. But you guys have to try out Nendo. It's made by Nichimen. Download the trial. It's never been easier to model in 3D before. The full version is only $99. Not bad at all.
