WHen creating your sparkle, you can achieve a very nice fuxxy effect to a star with the paint tool by turning the 'feather' option up. (make sure you have the advanced interface on)
I'd suggest giving the object rotational velocity, and lateral motion ?

I borrowed a technique used elsewhere ;) that attempts to look like a beam of light passing through the background.
I've used dkerr's idea about using the feather effect to get the star done.
