Personally, I've never been concerned about "over-crowded" prisons.
I mean, they're there for a reason right? Better there than on the streets raping and pillaging.
(Im talking the violent criminals...not petty drug offenders).
Of course prisons should be humane and such...but $40,000 dollars a year it costs? My girlfriend who has a Master's degree can't find a job that makes more than $35,000.
What are they feeding these guys...caviar?
Yeah..it's pretty sad. Today in america, a TV is considered to be a right for prisoners...what a joke.
Here's a funny (but scary) tidbit. ;)

In May, Great Britain's Home Office, deciding on the proper compensation for a man who served 11 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, ruled that he was entitled to about $1.1 million, but said he would have to reimburse the prison about $63,000 for 11 years' room and board. Said the outraged Michael O'Brien, 34, who had been freed by a Court of Appeal in 1999: "They don't charge guilty people for bed and board. They only charge innocent people." [BBC News, 5-23-02]
And another one. :D

According to an October dispatch in London's Daily Telegraph, Greenland operates probably the world's most inmate-friendly prison (with all residents having jobs on the outside at market wages and enjoying recreational excursions such as fishing and shopping), emphasizing rehabilitation over punishment (though its recidivist rate isn't any better than other prisons'). Guards do take up arms, but only on weekend hunting trips, when the inmates themselves are armed. The main advantage of the system seems to be that court sessions are brief, in that criminals, not fearing prison, usually confess to everything.
At least they are comfortable...
