Importing WAV vs. MP3 - swf size

I imported a WAV file about 11MB in size and was compressed nicely by Flash. Published swf file came out to about 125kb.
Then I used Flash5 to import the same file converted into an MP3 (1.02MB). The resulting published swf file came out to be 1.02MB (the same size as that mp3 coincidentally).

I thought using MP3 would result in a much smaller published file ?

Getting back to the WAV file... it's currently 44000Hz 16-bit stereo... what should I convert it to for better playback (the current sample rate sounds too sharp when played thru swf). I believe it's 22000 Mono... what bitrate, etc.?

Anyways..
The mp3 came out the same cause flash didnt need to convert the file to anything..It exported it as an mp3..
The first one you imported was a wav file.
And the export setting most probably was 16 kbps..
But since flash 5 exported the same mp3 it didnt change in file size..Hope you got it..

I mainly use 22 khz 16 or 8 bit mono..But streo if its good music..
This keeps my file low and the sound isnt bad either..

Hmm... I never changed any of the publish settings for sound or anything else anywhere... I guess it's a real surprise Flash4 can compress 11MB of WAV into a small SWF when published? Either way, I'm having a terrible time getting that WAV file to sound right after publishing it. Sounds great when I "TEST MOVIE"... too muffled in mono and too sharp in stereo.

If you guys make your own WAVs... what program do you use for editing? I'm using Goldwave and its SAVE AS options are so plentiful... I don't know which 22Khz 8-bit mono to choose. Anymore help is greatly appreciated!

I make my own loops in soundforge or fruitloops..SOmetimes mixman dj and dance dj..
But ialways edit them in soundforge.
ITs heaps easy to use.
Ive checked out your progrmas..And they dont have the same easyness and options as soundforge.

I guess when your exporting them they export them at the default settings which is 16 kps mp3..Which is bad quality.
I would open the library find the wav right click select properties..Then id select the export setting and then test by pressing the test button..

I am having the same problem with the sound that is exported from flash. I tried setting the mp3 compression rate on each individual file, overriding all setting on export, converting the file in Sound Forge to 11,000 8bit mono, and all settings under the sun. The fact remains that when the movie plays in the authoring environment, it sounds awesome. But, when I publish the movie as a Win Projector, of a SWF the sound is unacceptable. I have no idea where to go from here. If anyone has experienced this, please let me know what you did to solve it. You can either post a reply here or email me: [email protected].

An mp3 file can only have a certain amplitude when being converted from a wav file.
If this amplitude is exceeded especially if the quality of it is low then the sound will come out distorted because the mp3 cant handle it..
What id do is by using the amplify feature in soundforge decrease the volume of it..
Then try and export it as a wav then export it as a mp3 thourgh flash..
Ive had the same problems and solved them like this.

Was it meant to be in the first sound or second sound??

The popping and crackling is caused when the computer you are using to play the Flash file uses certain soundcards--ensoniq/Creative and there are others. This is well documented compatibility problem with Flash. They promised to address it with Flash 5, but the problem is still there.

It's working. Here is what I did:
1. I went to Sound Forge and saved the file as 22 kHz.
2. I made each audio clip into it's own swf file.
3. In my intro, I loaded each swf file onto level 1.

FYI, my 11MB WAV file compressed/exported with the RAW settings came out to a 2.63MB SWF file. Compressed/exported by ADPCM, it came out to a 768kb SWF. That's still a lot.. in your opinion, is a 768kb SWF tolerable ?

yeah it is quite big dude..
Very big for me anyways i got a 56 k and i would rather have normal sound quality than wait for it too load a long time
Your wav file is either very long or its properties are set so the sound quality is cd quality.
Id give the same advice..
Goto soundforge and change it to 22khz and 8 bit mono..
Then export as mp3 or wav..
The file size will reduce dramatically..

You can change the sound quality by finding the file in the library and right clicking and selcting properties.
Then youll be able change the export setitngs.
