"overlapping" the same sound on two layers

Howdy...

I'm having trouble here, read the book, looked online.. can't seem to find the answer -

I have a sound effect which is about 5 seconds long; I want, ideally, to have it run as long as a scene is open. If the sound loops its beginning is obvious.

So, I tried putting the sound in two separate layers so that the beginning/ends overlap - but when I play or test the movie, it only plays the sound from one layer... if I have the sound twice on that layer (with a gap so that the sound on the other layer can play) then there is a pause before the clip plays again, just as if the other layer with the same sound wasn't there.

I tried "Start" and "Event" in synchronization.

Any help appreciated!

If the sound has a gap in the sound file itself, you need to edit it. Usually you can do this in an aftermarket program. In flash, make a new movie clip and drag the sound to frame 1 and set it to start, with 2 loops to start with. Click the edit button. Look at the beginning of the line, if there is a short straight line, drag the slider knob, [it's in the center divider] to the right till that short spot is cut out. Now, using the bottom slider, go to about half way, to where you see the sound continue on in grey. That is the ending of the first loop and the beginning of the second. You can use the center slider again to match up the jagged lines to where it "sort" of matches. You'll never get it perfect unless the sound was made to loop. Test it a couple times in the editor, then test movie. Then go back and look again in the editor. Sometimes the center slider moves a bit. Readjust till you got it where it sounds the best.

Then go back and set the loops to like 999 or something and save it all.

There's no gap in the sound itself.... it's just that the sound itself changes enough to notice a little, but not if it overlaps.

Also, I'd like to put it on different tracks to control the stereo channel per track.

You can still edit it. And the stereo channels are in the sound file itself, not in layers. You control them with actionscript.

Ok...

But say I STILL wanna put a sound in one layer, then again in another layer, and have them overlap...

Can I do it?

No, it doesn't work that way. Something to do with the way flashplayer plays sounds.

Oh well....

I don't know why it doesn't work that way, but now I know, at least!

But I've tried doing what you want, and it never worked for me. But that's because there are other ways of doing it. ;)
