Afraid to fly.

I'm taking a trip to Myrtle Beach for baseball in about 3 weeks, and we're flying. I've flown about 4 times before, but it's never been an easy experience for me. Is anyone else here afraid to fly?

I guess it's the fact that i'm not in control that really scares me. I'm leaving my fate in someone else's hands. I know that i'm 1000x more likely to die in a car crash than in a plane crash, but never-the-less, i'm scared. I've thought about bringing a laptop on the plane with me to occupy some time, maybe watching a DVD on it or something. Is this allowed?

Just to tell you, you shoudln't be afraid to fly, if your afraid of heights then I guess I can understand why you don'y want to fly but otherwise don't be worried about it. Planes are very safe and on a plus, I get my pilots liscnce next year! w00t! Also just don't think about it, have you ever ridden with someone else in a car with them driving? As you said, you have a better chance of being in a car crash. With the labtop and stuff, yes it is, but you have to have it away during takeoff and landing.

Yeah, the bar. Hit the bar. Or if you're not old enough to drink, smack your head on the bar a few times, it's almost the same (waking up with a hurtin' head).

I don't think that being afraid of heights factors into the equation of fear of flying. I don't like heights at all, but I have no problem getting in a plane.

As long as I've been to the bar.

Yeah I'm afraid of flying too.. not so much of flying.. but take offs and landings.. and the time inbetween.. thinking bout all the millions of things that "need" to go right, and how some Mechanic that is nursing a hang over probably repaired something on the plane or perhaps didn't close a access hatch properly, and how that could rip a section of of the plane sucking passengers out.. or on landings.. maybe the Pilot had one too many drinks at the bar before the flight.. it's not hard to imagine being scared of flying..

Even with all that happening, chances are you would still be o.k. Boeing engineers went to like college and stuff.

Or better yet, if you encounter severe turbulence, find the cutest stewardess onboard, tell her you're a virgin and see if she'd like to help you out and play with your joystick.

I'm afraid to fly too, havnt in years. For me because of anxienty not fear of malfunction, so consider yourself lucky that all you need is a dramamine (sold in airport giftshop).
