Before I go ahead a download/possibly buy SwishMax, can I open (and upgrade) my Swish2 projects in the new app? Swishzone says that the two apps are separate from one another.

Short answer is yes, no problem, download the trial and check.
....you can, but as soon as you do this, you can't open these with SWiSH2 again, so if you have to be able to edit those files with SWiSH2 again, make sure you make a copy of the swi and save, before open it with SWiSHmax.

If you open the files in SwishMax, just save them with a different name & all is cool.
