The Professor of Philosophy challenged his students with this question:
"Did God create everything that exists?"
A student bravely replied, "Yes."
"Are you certain that he created EVERYTHING?" The professor continued.
"Yes Professor", the student replied.
The professor answered, "If God created everything, then God created evil -
since evil exists. Therefore, according to the principal that one's works define who one IS,
then God is... or has the capacity to be... Evil".
The student became quiet. Thoughtful.
The professor smiled, pleased with himself that he had (once again) proven that belief in a loving God was a myth.
Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask a question, professor?"
"Proceed", replied the professor - eager to press his easy victory.
"Professor, does cold exist?"
"Have you never been cold?" asked the Professor. "Cold most certainly exists."
A few students snickered at the question.
The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does NOT exist. According to the laws of physics,
what we consider "cold" is, in reality, the absence of heat. Every entity or object can be studied
when it has or transmits energy, and HEAT is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy.
Absolute zero (-460° F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at
that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."
The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"
The professor paused, then responded, "Darkness? Of course. Yes, it exists."
The student replied, "Sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is the absence of light.
We can study light, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light
into many colors and study the wavelengths of each color. But we cannot measure darkness.
One single ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it.
How can we know how dark a certain space is? We measure the amount of light present.
We cannot measure the "amount of darkness". Darkness is the term used to describe what
happens when there is no light present."
The young man went on, "And sir, evil does not exist."
Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course evil exists. We see it every day.
It is the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is the crime and violence everywhere in the world.
These manifestations are proof that there is evil."
To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir. At least it does not exist as an object itself.
Evil is the absence of God. It is, like "darkness" and "cold", a word that man created
to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love --
they exist - just as "light" and "heat" exist. Evil is what we call what happens when man does not have
God's love present in his heart. It is like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness
that comes when there is no light."
The professor sat down.
The young student was Albert Einstein.
