Has anyone got old hardware to sell to skint student?

Hey all,

Im a student in the UK currently about to enter my third year.

Without wanting to be flamed for trying to make students sound hard done by well i have basically been 0wned with regards to my bad luck.

3 years ago i got a new pc to which i got in stupid debt with, and it was good. My system is used pretty heavily, well, its never off. Anyways in May i got my first problem, my motherboard fried, and well, so did the processor. It was a bloody nightmare getting the cash together to replace both of these and in the end i managed to neglect paying my rent (i owe them money now!) as i really needed my PC for uni work as i do a art based new media degree and need it for things like maya to do coursework. An owing 200 rent is better than failing an entire year coz i couldnt do the work.

Anyways,

I have since noticed there seems to be a timebomb on all components to last until just after the warrenty runs out, or the parts are designed to have a lifespan of 3 years then just die.

Firstly, my ti4600 graphics card fan died, and i dunno how to ge the sucker off, so the case is open and its being cooled by a 3" case fan. This is fine, i mean whats cosmetic value?

Anyways last week, my 19" sony diamondtron monitor started abusing me, more in the fact that the entire display would flicker to a one pixel horizontal line. I thought it was the graphics card so i tried a new montior of my friends but it works. So basically i have managed to get a 15inch old school monitor of a family member and it feels like i have been raped of any resolution. Well i have. 1024*768 seems to give me the real estate of looking through a pinhole compared to 1600,1200 i had before. Ever tried working in Maya with that kind of res????? Ugh.

I have a 80 gb hard drive as my primary drive and a 8 gb hard drive i found where i keep my flash stuff and other little files i dont want to lose, such as fonts. This morning i went to turn it on and the HDD could not be found. I turned it off lastnight and woke up to it being busted today. So even continuin with the GUI i was making in flash has stuffed me as i cant get to those files on the 8 gig hard drive because the hard drive is stuffed now which has my XP on it, so it wont boot up. I do know a good bit about computers but basically its deffo the hardware and nothing else. The bios dont even know it exists which aint too suprising seeing as theres no power in the primary hard drive.

So basically, im getting a court order from my old flat which i have to fill out and return in 21 days with a payment plan which i cant really afford to pay anyways, and my next student loan is completely mauled by next years rent. There is no way i can get new bits to get a working PC again, but coz im in third year in 2 weeks time, i have an Independent Digital Project to begin and as you can see im in a horrific dilemma.

So without wanting to turn this board into request city, i would just like to know if anyone has any bits or pieces they would consider selling to me cheap? Like, if you have a old PC in the spare room ready to goto the dump an its been lying there for some time. Can i buy its hard drive??? Or have you just got a flat panel ok sized monitor and you plan to put your boot through the old bulky one just for fun. Or did you buy a DX9 complient graphics card and you were offended by it, so now its back in the box replaced by a nvidia :P

Well i could kind of do with some help and am willing to buy old bits off anyone. Obviously I dont really want to shell out 150 notes for your old (newish) graphics card you no longer want, but i mean kind of within reason.

The reason im posting on a public board and looking like a scumbag is just due to the fact im pretty desperate. There is no way i can do this year without access to a machine that works and student loans suck, i get £3800 a year which £3378 goes on rent so as you can see i aint no rich kid.

Anyways if you can help me id be most grateful for your time and patience!

This is rubbish... all universities have librarys and most have 24 hour access to machines... you can easily work without your own machine...

I think I'll close this thread, its just as bad as spam or some other rubbish...

A lot of people have part-time jobs for income in addition to student loans. Do you have one of those?

Just wondering what is the name of your degree? And what uni are you studying at?

Yes i do that keeps me going on the basics.

I wasnt really after anything for free, i just wanted to know if people had any old bits or pieces they wouldnt normally go through the effort to sell but fancy makin a few notes. Since the majoirty of us are computer users, i didnt see the problem in asking.

It is true that my university does have 24 hour library facilities, but consider the fact that my degree is somewhat specialised and i work with Maya, Premier Pro, Flash MX, etc.. the point being the university even with educational licences cannot afford the disk space and various other hardware requirements of providing every computer with access to these development tools.

There is a small room of macs shared between the entire art school which gives access to these programs, however the independant digital project is instead of a dissertaion and therefor requires many hours of work on a weekly basis and the macs were meant for teaching purposes and not for essentially "hogging" every day.

I didnt mean to offend, like i said i do have a part time job, but you must appreciate i have no other support apart from 12 hours per week which barely is enough to pay the stuff i have to pay off and the basics. I cant afford to shell out to replace all this stuff at retail level on a low wage and poor hours and im not bright enough to work full time and have participation in a full time degree.

Theres nothing worse than when your computer dies when your a student, MarkP i think you perhaps need to think about what your typing before you just assume you know it all like usual.

Congratulations on increasing your almost banned status! Thank you for your kind comments... No need to get your knickers in a twist though deary just because you're feeling a little inferior from a bashing in a previous thread...

I managed through uni without any kind of grant working my arse off... so for all these people to lazy to find a decent job and study at the same time, then come begging, they need a kick up the arse.

I know single mothers that go through uni, working, studying and bringing up a family.

That aside, it seems that this thread is just a way to pickup some cheap/free hardware, thus abusing our forums.

Mark you like another mod i know seem to actually live around the fact you have X amounts of posts, and your comment there just proves it. I have no interest in what people think of me in the coffee lounge, it has no effect to my life in any form.

You on the other hand, get kicks from being Authoritive while not actually having to meet people, you sit behind your computer and dish out the laws on forums as you have a complex where you believe your important and that people respect you.

Again there is no respect for you issued, i have read your posts in the past, you believe you are always correct much like me, but atleast what i say is my own opinion, you say things as tho it is fact.

I wasnt going to sell a object without a box or etc, but i decided because it was unused, because i never think about it and because it would be a nice help to someone who is blatently struggling financially, it would be perfect for me to furnish him with it.

I can already tell your one of those auld moaning .... people too because of the lack of forfilled life you have led. You talk about the fact you didnt get a grant, which is irrelevent, because you didn thave to pay a grand in fees, nor did you have a bunch of private landlords charging over the odds for rent. You get a loan these days not a grant. And the loan you do get is small and not enough considering its meant to be used to support study and buy books which is impossible.

Id liek to also just point out the fact that if you do decide to ban me, ill be back again anyways as i use the forum for a tool to learn flash. I do not have a reason to be banned as yet i do not believe and just because your a moaning old bast...person does not give you the right to decide im getting close to being banned.
