Just put a set of Dean Markley lite Bronze on my Taylor.
I am definitely getting medium next time, not sure why I had lite.

If you haven't learned that song yet, I highly recommend it.
Impossible to play without feeling incredibly cool, no matter how geeky you are in real life :)
would make even Kevin Covis cooler.

For acoustic strings, i love Elixer (the polymer coated ones)...such amazing bright and low end tones. The strings last much longer and are easier to clean.

I tried those... I thought they sounded very flat very quick.

Im not sure i want to... We wont see your Idol till some time near the middle of this year so i cant comment. I reckon Bryan Adams "Summer of '69" is a better song on the guitar, makes you feel even cooler!

Wow...never heard that before. When i worked at a music instrument store, people loved them. They are pretty damned expensive though.

yea, lefteye... the nylon doesn't do it for me. I need the bronze jangleang through and through... markley > elixr.

not to keep arguing about the elixers, but...

I loved that there was hardly any string noise with these. That squeal on an acoustic guitar can really kill stuff when recording.

... Maybe its just me and my boss then that like that song... how about Khe Sehn *spelling*... thats another good one...

See yea... that's not the sound I am after.
I am hardley doing any recording.
I like that tin bronzy top end.
To me that's a good acoustic sound.
and I still get the lows and mids thanks to the Taylor.

It's funny though. I asked the guy in the guitar shop (this was in December) what he thought the best acoustic strings were... he told me about the same exact thing you did... that's why I tried them. "They will last forever".

Yea those elixrs might last forever... but I would rather break a string every so often to force me to change those stale, dead suckers every once in a while :)

I was stoked when he did Dead or Alive on idol. Great song choice. He's been pretty good though I thought the last song kind of sucked. As my wife pointed out "the band is rocking harder than he's singing."

Ole Ace is a subject of a lot of humor here. That George Michael song about wanting to be his lovers father figure was creepy to say the least.

I agree about Covas. He should have been axed a long time ago. Nothing but a sympathy vote.

My favorites are Paris and Taylor. Paris is still pretty young and immature but I think she has the most raw talent. Some of the lines she hits are amazing. I can see Taylor having some kind of a Jimmy Buffet-like cult following some day. Soul patrol!

I wish I continued to learn the guitar when I was younger... Problem was my guitar teacher was slightly 'off' scared me away.

I tried again recently but... bleh.

my first guitar teacher was a HUGE stoner...i didn't know it then, when i was 8, but i def know now that he was. He really didn't care, he just wanted the money....which by the way...if you can find a good gig at teaching guitar, it can bring in some damn good cash.

I know a kid who teaches guitar at the small instrument shop where i used to work...he's got well over 70 students, and the average price per lesson which is weekly is nearly $20 for 1/2 hour. Full time can make you some good cash in a small town like mine.

D'Addario XL strings for my electrics. I forget what I put on my Hondo acoustic, but they're nylon and make my guitar sound like I'm playing a rubber band box. Does anyone know if you can put steel strings on that type of guitar. The guy at the music store asked me what the headstock looked like (has PVC tuning pegs) and when I pointed to a guitar with a similar head, he said "nylon."

For anyone considering what type (Light / Medium / Heavy), I found that it really depends on your guitar more than playing style. My neck was bending with medium-heavys. and wouldn't stay in tune for more than a couple hours of playing. I put some lights on it and it's been in tune for about a month now, even with heavy playing.

I'm afraid to change the strings on my two guitars with truss bars. I hear you might have to adjust the rod inside depending on what type of string you use, and I really don't want to botch it up.

Ok, I dug my package out of the trash. It looks like these would be 2002 guage.
Next time I am getting 2005. That should be perfect.

Nah, just go ahead and change them... it doesn't matter. Just don't take them all off at once (of course), just change them one at a time.

Steel strings on a classical guitar though? That might snap the neck.

Reminds me I actually need new strings for my mine. I hate new strings they're just too i dunno "twangy". Prefer it when they're dulled down a little with sweat and dirt.

Been so long I cant even remember how much a set of Ernie Ball 9 gauges cost these days, been about 5 years since I changed this lot, but my guitar wont stay in tune longer than 4 mins now so I guess it needs sorting.

I just recently learned out to properly string a guitar. :D I always stuck the wire through the hole first, then turned the key to wind it around the post. The problem was in figuring out how to tie off the steel strings. I should have taken a picture of my handy work. It was a nightmare.

The other way works much better and looks much nicer. Also, the way I used to do it bent the pegs a little because all of the tension was up top. :( Not only that, but because the strings were so high up, the 5th (D) would always pop out of the nut.

These come in handy.

Classical guitars should not be strung with electric or acoustic strings.
The instrument is too delicate. You will have more problems then you can handle.

Yep strings should have no more then 3 complete winds on the peg.
I prefer less. as the tension has a tendency to slip between the nut and the
peg if the string is wound too much.

A simple reverse wrap with the exess string under and up will suffice.

I'm actually proud of the work I did on the acoustic. It's so neat and straight. :D I just wound it until I had about 3/4s of the peg covered.
