I am thinking about adopting a rescue cocker spaniel. He is 8 years old and she says he is very loveable and house broken.
I have only had experience with pugs before and I want to know what your guys opinion on Cockers are. Anyone ever have one? He is rather old, are they smart if I have to re train him? Do they have good temperment? Is there any problems with the breed I should look for?
Sissy dogs. Get a Boston Terrier.
I'm kinda in the same boat here, my daughter wants a puppy for christmas and i am having hell trying to decide on a breed.
Bostons are great with kids, they don't shed a lot, almost never bark, and constantly want to play. Do it.

Not too bad, im really not into the smashed face look, but if they are quiet, dont shed much, and wont be barking all the damned time, i will definitely look into getting one of those.
cocker spaniels are lovely, loyal and super friendly dogs. They are clever enough to be a rewarding pet and stupid enough to have fun with all the time.
I love Cocker spaniels unless you didn't really notice from my messgae :)

cocker spaniels are not the funnest dogs and depending on their personality they can be real mean. If i remember correctly they're very territorial and bark alot. But i think it depends on how it was treated before you got it.
Used dogs can be a real pain if the owners aren't truly upfront about their upbringing.
We had a mutt that was supposedly in a real nice family with young kids and it was a really friendly dog. Turns out the 'father' used to beat the living crap out of the dog everytime he came home. Needless to say, after the dog took a chunk out of my leg, we got rid of it.
Cockers tend to be in-bread causing poor hind-quarters circulation. When mine was about 8 or 9 they'd start falling asleep on him causing him to wince if he had to flex. We gave him thorough massages all the time which helped a great deal but eventually led to us having to put him down.
They are great bird dogs and adhere to pack order. Establish dominance and he'll defend you to the death. Mine spent his first couple years in the pound so he really never lost the tendency to bite you if you tried to take back a chicken bone he'd snatched. He was the worst begger too.
He never really stood out as 'smart' but he knew how things worked and preferred routine.

Well, since I an getting a rescue dog I don’t have that much choice on the breed, but accept the fact that I will be getting a sissy dog - I'll just throw a spiked collar in him to make up for it.
I would love to go to a breeder and get a pug or Boston terrier but I am not ready to take on all the vet bills that come along with those type of dog.
I am kind of worried about the 'used dog' temperament. The lady that I have been talking to rescues dogs from the shelter that are about to be put down. She was saying that he was not adopted because he is so old - most people want puppies. She is not familiar with his background.

the cocker spaniel my cousins used to have was a very sweet dog. from what i remember, he was very lively and liked his long walks (tended to get a bit hypractive if he didn't get a lot of excercise). can't remeber what he died of in the end, but he was pretty old.
it is sad that so many people only want to adopt puppies ....same goes with kittens, that's we adopted an elderly cat (12).
hope you can give the dog a home- post photos here if you do get him :)
i'd love to have a dog, but seeing as there's no one at home all day from 7 in the morning til about 7 at night, it seems a little unfair on the dog.

I had an Irish setter about 30 years ago, a lovely dog but daft as a brush. My granddaughter just got a Cocker Spaniel puppy called Poppy
