im trying to make a flash animation run faster, which is the optimum way of doing so? reducing the frames or increasing the frame rate?
i noticed that from the default frame rate 12 to 25 or even 40 things run with smoother movement and faster, what do i loose in increasing the frame rate?
increasing the frame rate will help, reducing frames probably won't help. You can also optimize your graphics if you use alot of vector, select the vector graphic (won't work with jpegs etc) then from the menu:
Modify > Shape > Optimize
ps increasing frame rate could have bad effects on older computers so try not to go above 30ish

generally nowadays, what is considered as old computer? a 1GHZ AMD Athlon Thunderbird perhaps?
I guess i worded myself wrong by equating it to old computers. 30fps will make your animation totally smooth, going above that will generally make no difference in how your animation plays out and will also lag on older computers (all computers really), especially if your animation is graphic-intensive.
Click the picture of the clown on this site and play with the fps slider, you'll notice that there's a point where the animation just isn't going any faster no matter how many fps you set it to, also note that if you crank it the animation will be inconsistent:
