I have my doubts, it doesn't have the years of R&D that Flash has behind it, nor the ecosystem (Flex, integration with design tools, Flash Media Server, Remoting, SEPY, Laszlo, MTASC, Swift3D, 3rd party export to swf, etc.) Plus the H.264 announcement is huge for Flash too. Plus the development tools are Windows only.

Who thinks this will succeed if MS doesn't start bribing people to use it on high-profile sites?

Why couldn't it be an Active X installation like Flash? I don't remember ever having to download Flash Player to install it.

I don't think that it will ever take off. There may be sites that use it every now and then but I don't think that it will ever be as standard as Flash. I have 2 co-workers here that disagree and think that it will be a Flash killer but it has a long way to go before it gets there.

What's funny is that most .net site will use it...

Before I installed SilverLight I could view the page ok... after install i get jack crap.. Error: 4001...

uninstalled... again...

If they think I'm going to start my learning curve over just to get the exact same results they are well... microsoft. They had a great opportunity to fix what was wrong with the flash and instead they cloned it. Not one mention of added legibility for search engines which is the key thing holding flash back from becoming the only obvious choice for all web development.

I think it´s great news, why? simply because since Microsoft attacked adobe we got:
- flex3 for free
- h264 support
- apollo or whatever it is called now
- open specification of PDF
- collada support in PhotoshopCS3 (only professional)
some of those would´t be there right now if microsoft would attack a little. Of course I think as well that this microsoft copy prduct is evil but it´s attempt in this case at least is good for the competition.

oh and I wouldn´t propably install it anyway since I dont have the right OS for it and dont trust microsoft internet software.

The only way they can kill flash and do it fast is if they make an agreement with youtube and other big video sites to use silverlight.

As far as Silverlight, three things come to mind.

If they get a proper IDE (Sorry, but Expression ain't gonna hack it) that's accepted like Flash... they might have a chance.

In the mobile sector - Flash Lite and SVG-T are getting a bit long in tooth and not using the updated features (read: H.264 and other media via 3G and wifi)... Silverlight should be pushed out to the mobile OS as well... front face Windows Mobile phones... watch it's acceptance flourish in Japan and Europe.

And finally... when will they drop the Mac support like they did .NET? Microsoft is as bad as it gets when it comes down to a new product. Initial support is "decent"... but then they pigeon-hole you into their newest in order to get their newest. Which sucks.

I'm still intrigued by Silverlight, but not until they have an IDE and open the file format(s) where there's a community to support it properly then until then, no dice from me.

Interesting, my Opera doesn't detect that silverlight is installed. IE and Firefox does work and from what I've seen, I'm in no hurry to ignore Silverlight at this moment.

No man, don't get suckered in. There's no doubt in my mind that there is the same level of idiotic bugs as IE, they just haven't been found yet. Watch, it'll be IE all over again and hell, I'll switch the day they reach 99% ubiquity.

I have my doubts with SL, but the truth is that if MS really push this on their corporate clients then there will demand it even if they have no clue to what it really means, this in turn will mean a market for developers to produce solutions which will in turn then spread out to other areas eventually.

As far as long term in the best scenario I see a use for maybe corporate use or high end clients but only a small impact on the more day to day market of media rich internet development.

Personally I'll stick to Flex/AIR and at the best may dabble in SL when I get some spare time next year at the earliest...

Maybe if I came from a different skill set I could see Silverlight being attractive and new (until I personally slogged through my 30 days and realized it's guts weren't half as pretty as it's face) but as it stands...while I think it has it's plus side...there is nothing I see compelling enough to draw me from Flashplayer. Purely speaking for me here..others may feel the need to bring it into their toolbox of course whether just for kicks or to better fill clients needs. I'm a hobbyist and have a hard enough time keeping up with my main one let alone get sucked into a M$ mindset again (I've had my fill since Win 1, two Xboxs, two OS's and SP's a plenty and remember clearly the day I separated as a M$ well wisher)

You guys really don't remember Flash 1.0/2.0. Silverlight, I won't even defend it... it isn't for everybody, MS will invariably abandon it just like they did with Liquid Motion, VML, and just about whatever else they've thrown at Flash.

But what it does do... and I'd like to see it seriously do is move to the mobile market. There's a whole bunch of things it could do... but beat Flash isn't one of them.

I just want something new to research any damn way. Flash and me just... odd to me still despite using it more often lately.

Seriously I really can't remember flash 2.0, maybe because of Director.

Me, I'd give silverlight some face and let it bask in Flash's shadow and see how far it reaches. Could be good. Could be worse. They were the guys that come up with Windows anyway.

Maybe they don't wanna kill Flash. Maybe just to bite a portion of the pie. Hmm, reminds me of iPhone. (But yes awkward comparison, I know, as iPhone was revolutionary in its way~)
