I'd like to get some decent lighting for portrait shots - the flash on my camera is obviously quite harsh. I don't want to fork out for one of canon's expensive flashes - are there any cheap options for decent portrait lighting?

Don't you have a control button somewhere on your cam where you can reduce and boost the flash intensity?
Flash Compensation.
Still, he'll really want to move the flash off the camera. Then, opportunities aplenty await...
Yeah even with my 430 and the short off shoe cable the results are 10x better. I am not too sure on a super cheap option. Maybe find a used 430 or even a old 420. I don't know much about 3rd party flash brands...
Cheers - I was playing around with flash compensation and other methods of reducing the glare - it's not bad but doesn't have that really nice finish you see on professional lighting set ups - I'll have a look for 430 then.
you can always fix a piece of paper tissue with a rubber banding in front of the flash to dimm it down
Coffee filters works wonders as a diffuser.
...and you can get white or brown ones which give different light also...brown ones are tad more smootherQuote:
