i am trying to put a video in flash and compile it into an .swf. what is the best video format to use within flash?
I try to bring in quicktime but it says flash doesn't support it.

IMHO use .flv.
Use the FLVPlayback component or better yet, use NetStream (much more versitile and powerful) instead of embedding into the timeline... but if you have to embed in timeline, I still think .flv is best.
