how to create a new font

wondering, how can i create my own font? Is there a software through which i can create it...perplexed. pls help me out of this doubt. coz i really want to make one of my own :)

I use fontlab, its great. Making a font takes a long time though.

I also use adobe illustrator to draw the letters in a vector format to begin with, then copy and paste them into fontlab
