As flash players are obviously more widespread than ever b4, I was wondering why use animated gifs? It's a thing that has just always bugged me...
Obviously flash banners are a lot better (looks, design, feel etc) - they would also boost clickability as it just simply looks like a better site that ur interested in. So why are we still seeing the old animated gifs?
Im not at all biased towards flash - I like nice little animated gifs, but I presumed there would be a lot more input into flash banners.
Any input from u guys? What are your thoughts?

I personally hate gifs! :D
However, even when flash is very widespread, there are still lots of users that haven't got the player. To create flash banners in a site where flash is not used in any other way (navigation, intros...) seems to be stopping fairly new users to get into the site...

i'm sure there's some javascripts available that can detect whether flash player is installed or not, and then either load the swf or an animated gif instead (rather than having to have 2 copies of the same web page)...
and if you find one, please let me know :)

Banners are on the out. Intermercials using flash are the only thing that is getting a decent rate from people still willing to do web advertising. You can hear the tumbleweed roll when you pitch banner ads now of any type.

Yeah - but I was just even talking about banners to links in the same site - not necessarily banners to other websites.
Any more thoughts u guys? The more the better.

hmmmm,
unless you're on a site that has already defined the user as having flash it's gotta be gif time I'm afraid.
joseph8's right about interstitial advertising too, although i do think that there is still some money to be made with banners - imagine how crap the web would be if you had to watch a 3 second ad inbetween every page click, kinda defeats the whole point of optimising download speeds etc.
the real factor that affects whether or not a banner gets clicked on is its relevance to the page you are already on. for instance a banner about recruitment, on a recruitment site, will get hit about 8 times more often than a banner about car insurance in the same place.
whilst it's easy enough to get banner space these days it's a lot harder to make people click it. then you get on to whether the people clicking the banner are the sort of people you want to be clicking it........
marketing, eh?

as part of flash 4, when you publish a FLA, it allows you to display a gif if the flash player isn't installed.
If you make point the gif src to the banner.... hey presto.
p.s. If they ain't got the flash plug-in, then they're wrinkleys and nearly deads, so screw em..
