The artist/director (http://www.pupuplatters.com) for this game has always wanted to create an NES RPG and I said I'd program for him. This is what we have so far.

looks pretty good, but if i hold down the arrows too long and let go he keeps walking for a little while
He walks until he his standing on a tile, just like NES :D
When talking to the girls I find that it words are broken up between lines and pages. This is kind of annoying and I don't belive NES did this. Looks crappy so far (just like NES)....jk!

Sorry to say it plays unbearably slow on my computer... 900Mhz, and it shouldnt do! Ive had many a tile engine running at 40fps+
It seems slow on my computer too. (1 Ghz, 512 RAM) What is it supposed to run at?
One thing that may be leading to the speed loss is that you aren't getting rid of sprites when they are off screen, they stay drawn when they don't need to be. If you tracked their tile position, you could remove them and if the hero backtracks, attach them at the last tile they were on. Rooms with a lot of sprites will be a problem unless you can do something about that, I think.

I tried it on my 400 mhz laptop and it was a bit laggy. Lemme see the what happens when I take out the civilians.

I took out all of the civs and it's still slow. Hmm...is it becuase I have a for loop onEnterFrame?

Well on any of the newer computers it runs quite nicely. But on the older guys it gets slow.

ps, what does the for loop do thats running onEnterFrame? :confused:
It's attachMovie() and removeMovieClip()
The loop checks each tile's variable x and y to see whether it needs to be attached, removed, or left alone.
Looks, great and playes fast on my computer (2.4mhz athlon). I really like the music too.
Having the words split onto 2 line without a - jars a bit, plus there is no break when different characters speak. Also I see you have the thing that I get in sword of Mana, golden age etc, where you're pumping the continue button to get through the unneeded dialogue, then you start talking again by accident and have to go through it again. I really hate that.
Still, really promising. Looks like you have a proper rpg in the making!
its slowlyness (if that's even English) could be caused by the fact that the swf its scaled to fit the entire html page
make it smaller
also remove all your npc when they off screen that should inproove speed a little

Does file type (.png, .jpg, .gif) have anything to do with it?
Does that "loop" check every visible tile or every tile in the map array cuase to check every tile in the array would be pointless and that could lag it.
Ps i love the BGM its pretty sweet.
I use those file types and have never had a problem. Raster graphics are always generally good to use.

I just added a conversation (function if you want to call it that) so talk to one of the civilians and you can see how it will work.

I decided to take out the attaching/deleting for curiosity's sake, and BAM! It's like 300 times faster!
I might need to slow things down now to keep the NES style going...
I take it that the attach/delete code was for the tiles? Does that mean all the tiles in the current map are on screen at the same time now? and are all scrolled at once?Quote:

Either way, good to hear it's going faster :) You able to upload the new swf so we can see it in action? I wouldn't mind seeing the speed difference. It was going incredibly slow before.
Note: gotoAndStop engines are faster than attach/remove ones.

It does indeed run a lot faster but I see you now have the entire map generated and scrolled. That'll be a problem if you have really large maps. Since it's definitely something that was wrong in your attach/remove code, you might want to post it so people here can try and see what needs improving/fixing.

Okay, I made a really big map to see if it makes a difference. I don't really notice it, do you?
edit: er, I tried it on my laptop and it does this weird skipping thing :confused:
I tested it on a Celeron. It goes slower now with the larger map and semi-locks up for a second every now and then. On a 1Ghz machine though i'm betting I wouldn't have slow down at all (not home right now so can't test that).
Looks good. I wish the walking was faster. I don't even recall Dragon Warrior being that slow.
Please get this past engine stage... story, a couple scenarios, saving. I'll be happy then.

So far I'm liking it. The conversation function is pretty good. It'll be great to see this as it progresses. It came out pretty good the way you've got the characters following one another.
Your map format is terrible, to be blunt.
You have the right start with the joined array with ,'s so now join each row with a |, and then you can have your whole map in 1 string.. In your case, your display map in one string, and your collision map in another, and if you wanted to go the extra step, you could join both of them with a # for even more stylee points.
Anyways, just trying to help =D

you could compress lines such as 1111111111000000001 to 10x1,8x0,1
That's just temporary. I'm working on the map editor right now so I'll never have to see the messiness :D

very cool menu! Just make sure you can click up and you end up at the bottom. I would really like to see this as a proper game with a good story line. But take it slow, build up on the engien and keep the story in the back of your mind :)

What are the things following you?
Now for some suggestions:
-animated tiles
-walls (or stuff that you can walk behind)
-keys for doors so you have to walk around to get the keys (the you don't need a map bigger than what you have for some very long game play)
-saving
