Nintendo sold some 360,000 units of the $249 USD next-generation console in April, up 39 percent from the previous month and its highest monthly sales total since January, retail data from research firm NPD Group shows.
On the flip side, Sony's PlayStation 3 again showed slowing sales, falling 37 percent to only 82,000 consoles sold during the month. A lack of first-party titles and compelling new games are being blamed for the console's weakness.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 was also off 13 percent for the month, selling 174,000 units, however the company said it saw evidence that the release of the HDMI-equipped Xbox 360 Elite helped to soften the typical seasonal decline.
Since January, sales have fallen only 17 percent for the Wii, while the Xbox 360 has fallen some 41 percent and the PS3 67 percent. The Wii's sales stability has allowed Nintendo to gain quickly on market leading Microsoft and pull further ahead of Sony.
Xbox 360 accounts for about 59 percent of the installed next-generation console user base, followed by 27 percent for Nintendo and 14 percent for Sony.
I'm still waiting to see a wii on store shelves. It's been sold out everywhere since it's release.
So... looks like Nintendo initially got it right... and Sony's just a-sinking. Read about it here...Quote:
Sony Corp.'s (6758.T) game unit said on Thursday it planned to cut jobs in the United States and was eyeing restructuring steps in Japan as it struggles to keep up with industry rival Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS).

Sony Computer Entertainment, which makes video games and the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console, announced plans in April to cut up to 160 jobs in Europe, or 8 percent of its work force there, and said it would look to streamline its U.S. and Japan operations.
Sony's game division posted an operating loss of 232 billion yen ($1.91 billion) in the year ended March 31 due to hefty start-up costs for the PS3, a spec-heavy console that has been losing out to Nintendo's simpler but wildly popular Wii.
I was emailed this so I don't have a link.
The only thing nintendo got wrong this time is their online gaming friends network and maxing out at 480p.Quote:
June 4 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co., the world's third- biggest maker of video-game players, widened its lead in Japan last month after its Wii consoles and DS portable players outsold products from Sony Corp., a research firm said.
Nintendo sold 251,794 of its newest game machines in May, outselling Sony's PlayStation 3 consoles five to one, Tokyo- based research firm Enterbrain Inc. said today in a faxed statement. The PS3 trailed the Wii by four to one in April.
This is just the start of their latest gold rush too. With so many systems in homes, even mediocre games are going to sell like crazy. And with that ol' SNES dominance coming back, we should have another string of classics on our hands. I wonder how Rare feels right now.
prolly like a pinata that nintendo is hitting with a wiimote.
Erm... I didn't even know that it was coming to the 360. Damn.Quote:
Take Two revealed that downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV will be available for Xbox 360 exclusively in the financial year of 2008 (Nov 1, 2007 to Oct 31, 2008).
And this was at one time announced as a PS3 exclusive, right?Quote:
Bandai Namco announced Soul Calibur IV for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the game will have a new battle system which makes the battles more realistic and the environment more interactive elements. Soul Calibur IV will be coming in 2008.
That is why I am getting a 360- to play GTA IV. There are other games I want to play as well but GTA IV is the deal breaker.

About damn time he admitted it. Wasn't he the CEO that stated that the PS3, if anything, was too low?Quote:
Sony CEO Howard Stringer admitted in an interview that the price of the PlayStation 3 needs to come down, but provided no estimate as to how much of a price drop consumers can expect.
"That is what we are studying at the moment. That's what we are trying to refine," he told the Financial Times on Thursday. He also admitted that the Nintendo Wii had broad appeal to consumers, and acknowledged his success.
"I would be the first to say to you that Nintendo Wii has been a successful enterprise and a very good business model compared to ours," he said, adding much of its success had to do with price.
Sony has lowered the price by 20 percent in Japan ahead of its November launch, however it did not lower the price elsewhere. Even with the price cuts, the PS3 is still struggling, being outsold by the Wii there by a five-to-one margin.
Dang I might have to put off my January purchase until next summer.
Usually with most speculation, I scoff. But I had to share this...
Waggle Wall? For the PS2?Quote:
- UNCONFIRMED: In addition, Square Enix expressed that they do not plan to develop any more new titles for PlayStation 3 until the console install base rises to a profit making level.
- RUMOR: Sony will release a new "Waggle-Wall" bundle pack for PlayStation 2 in Christmas, for US$99, the Waggle-Wall is a Wii Remote type motion sensing controller, to compete with Wii. Sony has already registered the new controller for patent protection in December 2006.
I cant see sony spending another drop of r&d on the ps2. Even if they were using it as a testing ground for possible ps3 release. They just need to suck it up, drop the price and focus all energy on getting an install base that doesnt scare off devs. I really want the ps3 to be everything they envisioned but their arrogance is laughable. They are the America of tech companies.

UNCONFIRMED: PS3 price drop is getting close! According to various sources, Sony will announce a $100 price drop for PlayStation 3 in North America next week at E3, the price will go down to US$499 (or $549 in Canada).

Bandai Namco has confirmed that Beautiful Katamari is coming exclusively to Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 version has been canceled.
In order... more price cuts, more exclusives being canceled for the PS3 and moving to the 360, and a longer wait for GT5 (grrr).Quote:
Polyphony Digital's director Kazunori Yamauchi revealed new info on Gran Turismo 5 for PS3. The game could be released in Spring 2008 the earliest. In GT1, each vehicle requires one day of work; in GT3, each vehicle requires 30 days of work; and now in GT5, each vehicle requires 180 days of work. At present real time damage is not yet available, because they want it to be absolutely realistic, so damage models could be available in future upgrades.
I think the Square part is even more bull. Final Fantasy games never needed a strong userbase, those games always created the userbase. If anything than they would demand a price drop. I personaly know two people that will buy the PS3 at the time FF XIII comes out ... and one that will buy one when GT5 comes out. Only bad games with bad reputation, or no reputation at all need a big userbase to find some buyers ... or they have to be the only games out. :pQuote:

So it looks like I'll be buying a 360 in Jan. (maybe sooner) and a ps3 next summer if at all.
