As for pacman I wouldnt use A* at all. I'm not sure what to use but I have a thought that splitting the map into nodes and just linking them together would be good. Using lookup tables with this is kind of the idea. Kind of linking preset paths.
I read an article on this somewhere but it defeats me where it is. I think a tutorial on programming pac man would be something that would be kinda fun.
btw just searching on the net for pac man ai spits back a lot of other peoples work.
