Like in Oz we don't have to tip here in the UK as waiting staff get paid a wage rather than having to depend on tips.
I rarely tip unless it is really good service and I very rarely tip taxis cos I know most of what they earn they keep rather than waiters who give most of it ot the restaurant.
On the other hand I am far to English to send back food, I will just put up with it, we don't like complaining!!!!!
Unless it is really bad.
Well, in the US it's SOP ... someone help me out here - Last I remember - waiters/waitresses received something like $2.01/hr (less than minimum wage) - the rest of their income in dependant on tipsQuote:

I mean we do our best but when everyone's all complaining and crap it's really hard to show a straight face and serve as well. Although I was great at it! In my head I'm like 'screw you!'
There's been times when I felt like decking some of the customers.
Remember, waiters/waitresses serve your food, so we can put anything extra in it and you won't even know about it! We can spit in your soup and you'd be none the wiser!
I'm willing to tip for good service. The waitrons are doing a job that I will never ever be able to do without resorting to extreme physical violence. :D On the other hand if I get bad service I don't tip at all, and tell everyone I know about the bad service of that place. Hell I tell people I don't know :p

The way i see it:
If you're going to hire an employee, pay them at least minimum wage. Why do we, the customer, have to pay their salaries/wages? Its not that I dont think putting down a little extra if they even got paid decent would be bad, but damn why do they only get paid like $2/hour and rely on us for huge tips?
And yeah, thats just dumb to be a bad waitor/waitress. You know you're not gonna get tipped.

like i said..employers should pay. I dont expect customers to pay my paycheck, why should a restaraunt be any different?

As a chef I gotta ask how do you expect the food/service to improve if you don't mention the problem to staff? This CAN be done diplomatically. If the chef has made an honest mistake in my kitchen we will always redo the dish, not just fix it up. We also ensure the waiter thanks the guest for their feedback.
...and OMEGA...you deserve whatever looks you get for asking for well done beef! LOL. Cripes..it's been killed once..why do it again? :D

When someone services me they get a tip regardless. Im usualyy happy they paid any attention to me at all let alone doing that. :D

nice girls with a cute smile get big tips, even bigger if the service is well and the food tastes good, always smiling chinese people get good tips too, i dont give
big tips to ugly old barmen that loose their hair already...

on my most recent sojuorn to the usa, i was appalled that the waiting staff had the audacity to add the gratuity (20%) to the bill below the total, but hand written and then a new total also handwritten below that.
apparently it is common practice if you don't sound american " just to help you calculate it"
as a result no one in the group of people who i was with left any tip in any of the resturaunts that had this practice
i cant believe that the american public put up with the tax evasion being perpertrated (sp) by the resturaunt owners. getting away with paying your staff a pittance and using the guilt of the patrons to help you aviod paying the payroll tax is obscene
if the 20% that was being added onto our bills was for the staff wages, then actually add it to the bill on the till and pay the people accordingly
a friend of mine worked in a restaraunt in nyc for four months illegally and was paid no wages at all as she was illegal, so she had to rely on tips. all of this so the government wouldn't find out.
real employment laws would also help cut down on your illegal imigrant problem
for the record tipping is not compulsorary in ireland, although it is a practice that is invoked for good service

ok...here's whats really goin on. i am an upcoming flash/graphic designer, but for the last 9 years i have been a waiter at restaurants all over the world. in the usa, a restaurant can pay a waiter as low as 2.13 an hour. obviously, the server is there for the tips. other countries like the uk and australia either pay their servers WAY more than 2.13 an hour or they use high school help with high school quality. for all of you knuckleheads with your penny tips, no tips...i can GUARANTEE you have eaten quite a bit of spit. especially if you went to the same restaurant twice. word travels fast when you are a lousy/no tipper. it's not my style but many times you dont have to worry about spit, worry about your credit card number. so pay cash if you wanna be cheap loser ;) it's ok to not tip or tip low if service is bad. more likely, your waiter knows service was bad and expects it. but if you want your lemon slices or have special requests, tip at least 18%. 15% is regular, decent service. 20% for a fantastic experience. if you are hopelessly cheap...go to mcdonalds ok. thats what it's there for. if you want your drink full and your food prepared just the way you like it, pay for it. otherwise, go get a 99 cent burger ok. :cool:
I'm normally a good tipper, but at one restaurant I waited close on a hour for a sandwhich. I left the waiter a note, "Here's your tip, next time don't keep me waiting this long" :D
Same here. I only tip for good service. For bad service, nothing.
I remember long ago, when as a family we went to a famous fish & chip resturant. An old waitress came to us without smiling and asked "your order please?". My young sister (remember it must have been around 5 or so years ago) did not like eating fish with bones so she asked the waitress politely "do the fish have bones?".
She gave her a blazing look and said "ALL fish have bones!".
After the meal, on the way out, she said to the waitress -- "the only tip you will get from me is -- try to smile next time!".

I must agree with the Japan being the best -- it is not the same but when I went to a Japanese resturant with a group of friends (7), the whole meal cost each of us around 80pounds (including huge tip) but it was well worth it.
What about buying drinks for bartenders?
I've worked behind the bar quite a lot, and only occasionally got drinks bought for me.
In the UK, working behind a bar is hell come 10.30, and you get no thanks for it; it's all "get your drinks as quick as you can and then run" from the customers.
The only time you really get any sort of a tip is if someone orders 10 drinks and there's change out of £20 or something...when a friend of the family from Berlin came over to visit he was appalled at the way us bar staff were treated; he said that it's the other way around on the continent, be nice to the bar tender or you get nothing.
I'm not even talking about tips really, just generally the attitude to people providing you with a service is terrible in this country.
I tip for good service and for good food. Generally the waiter / waitress doesn't dictate when you get your food, the kitchen does. The waiter certainly doesn't have any bearing on how your food tastes or it's presentation (unless they spit in it).
If I got crappy service but loved the food I would still tip, but I would give the tip to the restaurant manager to give to the kitchen and explain exactly why I didn't just leave it on the table.
We had a meal in Covent garden last weekand they added an extra 15% to the bill automatically for the staff. I'm all for tipping for good service but I don't think it should be assumed like that, it takes away a) your option not to pay it and b)the sentiment!
I'll tell you what REALLY annoys me, its those staff in the toilet scavenging for money for giving you a bit of tissue to dry your hands on. I can do it myself!
you can legally refuse to pay the 15% if you don't want to. best to make your intentions clear AFTER you eat though ;)
