LTH,
Could you post the swi so someone can look at it?

LTH,

Flick here is the URL: http://www.marinelaunch.com/test1/test1.swi There are no actions just the text. Thanks, LTH
in the transform tab ( click your text layer ->transform tab )
please don't fill in x = 50.3 y = 43.2
try int -> x=50 y=43 and W & H
good luck

When I opened the file the text was on fractional coordinates - here it is moved to x=40 y=30 - http://www.wellesley.edu/Chemistry/Flick/test1a.html and http://www.wellesley.edu/Chemistry/Flick/test1a.swi
Cheers,
Flick
Thanks Flick & mzhang that was my problem all along the fractional coordinates. Hopefully this will help others having problems with blurry text. :)

i know i'm not the only one who's thinking this (after reading through this whole thread)...but do people actually read the help / advice that we try to give them, or are they always looking for us to do it for them?...and have we created an ugly and apathetic precidence on this forum because of this?
Thank you for making this point. I thought I was the only one who thought so.Quote:

you're definitely not the only one...i'm just wondering if noone has tried to do anything about it in the effort to keep this forum 'friendly'. this forum is constantly bombarded with the same questions day in and day out...answering them becomes repetative at best, if not simply annoying...and every help post seems to end with a "could you post the SWI for me" or even worse "can someone please do this for me". to those that give of their time to help out, i definitely applaud you. and i will definitely continue to pass what i know down to those just beginning, but as i remember when i was in school and i was stumped on a problem, i didn't ask the teacher to do it for me. i worked on it, sometimes for hours, until i got it right. then the next time i came across the situation i was prepared. we are doing a great disservice to those who are less educated about swish if we keep throwing out the answers and allow them such a laissez-faire attitude. i think it would be prudent of the mods to do a better job moderating the forum for multiple posts and informing those who are new(er) or repeat offenders to utilize the search function of the site and to use proper subject lines.
yes, sometimes answers are simple, and i'm not saying 'let em rot in hell'...but handing out swi's like they're candy only gets people addicted to the candy. and who wants a forum full of people on sugar highs? :)
persaltier & monkeypants I take exception to both your comments. I have searched through these forums for many hints on questions I have had about SWiSH and found many answers, but occasionally one runs upon a problem that you can't solve and need additional help with which is the case here. I have never asked anyone to "fix my problem for me". I have asked for help on a problem (which I thought the title SWiSH Help Forum meant). I have run upon a couple of posts that you guy's have made lately that have been very negative about helping others just like this one, so all I can say is "If you don't want to help don't visit the forums". Let's all remember that we are or were all new to SWiSH one day and we all needed some help at one time or the other so don't be so hard on us newbies.

If you're using the search first, then my comments weren't directed towards you, so you shouldn't have taken offense to them. I realize that this is a help forum, and monkeypants and myself have been on this board for a very long time helping out the newcomers. However, in order to keep this forum up to par, everybody needs to take responsibility for setting the tone of the boards. Over the past year or so (esp. since v2 came out) I've seen more and more people who come onto the boards, don't search the archives, don't use a qualitative or informative subject line, and post requests that have either already been answered numerous times (how many more times are we going to see a thread that asks for a popup window) or post requests for someone to pretty much do for them what they can't figure out for themself after putting only 5 minutes of effort into thinking about it.
Believe me, I'm no elitist Swish snob. I learn new things all the time, and the reason I visit the boards is b/c I think that Swish is a great product and I'd like to help it succeed.
The reason I spoke up in this thread is because it doesn't seem like the instructions that Flick spelled out in the post were paid attention to:
1. left justify the text
2. set the text at the correct point size (usually 8, but others are beginning to use other settings)
3. set the pivot point for the text at top left (in the transform panel)
4. set that top left corner on integral values of x and y (also in the transform panel), and if you move the text or add more text always reset it to integral values.
If those were aid attention to then there would have been no reason for you to post your SWI file or for Flick to download it and check it out only to see that #4 on his list was not followed. I also noticed that you were not alone in missing #4, so please don't think I'm singling you out.
It's just to the benefit of everybody and this forum that people follow certain rules when posting on this board so that the # of multiple threads are minimized...the person w/ the question gets their answer quicker b/c it was already answered...and people actually learn how to become better swishers than just how to apply an SWI that someone else submitted (for tutorial purposes).
***just FYI to any mod that reads this: Please don't think that I am trying to show 'mod' status...I have no desire to be one. I'm merely trying to help make this a better board.***
and lth..i went and did an advanced search for "clean text" which brought me to this thread --> http://board.flashkit.com/board/show...hreadid=249312 which had a good explanation as well as links to sites w/ those miniml fonts and other pixel fonts, as well as a link to http://board.flashkit.com/board/show...hreadid=246326 which even details further the situation. Again, my point isn't to pick on you or anybody else. It's to show you that by performing a search first you can almost always come up with the answer on the spot so you don't have to wait for others to respond.
I love you all :)
Make sure your the SWF quality is set to low in your export panel.

that's a good tip if you have a lot of objects that seem to be slowing the flash player down, but if you follow the 4 steps above it doesn't matter what the quality level is set to.
(from the swish help files)
Sets the level of anti-aliasing performed, and hence the smoothness of objects when playing a Movie. It sets the Quality value of the Object and Embed tags. Because anti-aliasing requires a faster processor to smooth each Frame of the Movie before it is rendered on the viewer's screen, the Quality parameter assigns priorities to appearance and playback speed.
I'd have to agree with alot of what Persaltier said, excepting that for first timers the Search Function isn't that obvious. I posted a couple of .swi's once and all I got was emails saying I can't make it work etc, my client is waiting etc etc Never again, yeah big loss I know.
There are far too many asking for.swi's instead of advice on how to do it themselves. Recent posts here have included : I can't be bothered etc so you do it for me, oh yeah and email it to me when done.............Hey why email it ? Send it via UPS with a bunch of flowers and some coffee.......
Seems that because Swish's INITIAL learning curve is so short and people here are so helpful, that people seem to forget the most basic and oldest advice anyone can give on any software before asking questions........RTFM
persaltier,
I was just talking about pixel fonts at low quality.
Nonetheless, right you are.
rv-
i've never come across low quality being a proper solution. my only question on that arises when you combine text w/ graphics in the same SWI, then you're applying the same low quality to the images, which won't smooth them out. (their edges).
I'd like to thank you guys. For a while now, I've had the same problem: blurry text. Instead of dumping my problems on you guys, I decided to work with it, see what I can do. Then I come back here after a few days, and BAM! There's a whole new page to the thread, which helped explain my problem. So thanks. I'll be sure to mention the Swish Help community in my site.
Well, things have been going great so far with the text. I finally managed to make a good scroller, although i still don't understand the basics. But as I scroll, the text becomes blurry at times. I made sure everything was right. The text in the sprite was left aligned, and look sharp before scrolling. But then, after scrolling, at points it looks blurry. What can I do?
If you are using a scroller with text that is in a pixel font then you must make sure that your scroller moves in single pixel increments - this assures that the text always remains on integral coordinates. I have several examples on my web site but my server is down at the moment. One example (only available after the server is back to life) is http://www.wellesley.edu/Chemistry/Flick/peeffect5.html and http://www.wellesley.edu/Chemistry/Flick/peeffect5.swi
Cheers,
Flick
Makes sense. Well for some reason I can't download it. So how can I do this? Decrease the frame rate of the "move" effect on the text? Change the x/y coordinates?
Server is still down - try again tomorrow morning to download.
You want to use the transform action so for example you would make a three frame sprite that would control motion downward. The first frame would have a stop, the second would tell target the text sprite with _y-=1 and the thrid frame would go back to the second. The first frame would keep the scrolloer stopped until you rolled over something that told this controller sprite to go from frame 0 to frame 1 and play.
Hope this helps,
Flick
