Anyone doing it? And doing it well????
If anyone has taken the plunge into self employment (From a full-time job, not from school), please post.
I am 30yrs old, have been in the industry professionally for 4 years and am considering self employment. I am married, but no kids (maybe in a few years). I have a fully equipped office in my house right now. So I would plan to work from home for a while.
My wife works also, and I am covered under her insurance so that is not an issue.
It is just hard to give up a steady stream of income.
I am curious to know of anyone who is in a similar situation or who has already done it. What kind of income potential is realistic?
BTW. I live in South Florida USA
My two canadian cents worth
All the replies concur with what I've been going through over the last couple of months. Two workmates and I have started a web and print design company in sunny Canada. The entire reason for doing so was justified by the number of clients we had in a side-venture we had going while employed by our former boss.
What actually made us go it ourselves was one project that created the all important 'tipping point'. That is, the point where there is no choice but to do ... whatever you're forced into doing.
My advice to anybody thinking of starting to freelance...line up the work and keep with your old job until you HAVE TO leave. You'll save yourself the financial headaches, plus you'll have the crucial 'company portfolio' to point prospective clients to. You don't want to be referring to work you've done for your former employer...it screams 'non-professional'.
