for the hostname you can probably use:
$db_host = "localhost";

however for the other 3 variables, you will probably need to ask your mates. someone will have to create the database, and when they create the database they will specify the database name, username and password.

some hosts have control panels that letyou create MySQL datapases remotely. for instance, with my host, I can go to www.my_url.com/mpanel and create the database from there. i am not sure how common this is (i'm new to all this too)

Is this the sort of PHP script that will only work with PHP version 4.0 or earlier? (as per this post)

I have been trying to get this script working but I haven't got it passing the variables correctly.

Has anyone tried to update it so that it works with the new version of PHP?

mbenney - sorry, those php/mysql info can only be gotten from your provider. Or in some occasions it has been given in their control panel. Bellan, it's not always 'localhost', that all depends on the host.

Bellan, about it not working on php 4.1. I don't know about that, but I'll check the script later (in college when I'm bored ;) ) for you. But remember that it might be something else. What kind of error are you receiving?

I checked all the functions I used with the documentation, and I just used normal functions that are working for PHP3 and PHP4. No special mentions about 4.1, so that would work as well.

What kind of error do you get, and are you certain you ran the install.php script correctly?

And if I manually put data into the database, I can read from it successfully:

However I can't write to the MySQL database as this test swf demonstrates:

i cant even get the install script to work! but maybe try setting the chmod permissions to 777

ok i finally managed to get the install scropt to install!

now in an swf im using this to add a score

_root.pass = "xxxxx";
_root.name = "bouss";
_root.score = 651;
somevar = random(9999);
loadVariablesNum("new_score.php?" add random(999), 0, "POST");

now i open get_score.php to check if the score has been submitted, but its giving me this error...

Warning: mysql_fetch_object(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/virtual/site216/fst/var/www/html/get_score.php on line 39


any clue as to what the problem is!?

i'm having real trouble setting this up, is there any chance you could provide an example swf. I've got the sql working and the php server is running fine. I just can't get it to add any data to the sql database?

yep will do, do you know if using this system is it possible to remove an entry without clearing thewhole table? eg if the table was hacked you would want to delete that entry but not the legitimate scores...

i'm not sure, but i guess you could do it using phpMyadmin . If you where setting up a flash interface for the admin side i guess you would have to specify which score had been hacked by getting the id number of the data record. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to set something up.

I've been working on a loadVars version, the only problem is that it only works with GET and not POST http method.

Any ideas?

well the method below does work but it is unsecure because of the GET protocols, still can't switch it to post. It seems that when switching to post the vars aren't parsed to the php file, as i've never used loadVars with POST before i don't know quite what's wrong but i'm sure someone will point us in the right direction.
