hey, I'm a big guy; but I fit into a regular coach seat with no problem - without touching the armrests even. So, when they say obese, they must mean BIG people.
for the record, I'm like 6"1 and 230 pounds...
I think it's fair... but the comments in this thread, fat ass this, fattie that, blah blah... not nice.
the seats are even bigger in first class :p
hmmm. this thread is taking quite a nasty turn. surely the whole point was commenting about sw's policy rather than why overweight people are overweight? markp.com - not exactly constructive comments :(

Hahaha... I am just sick of winging idiots that complain about being fat, when its their own fault.
They'd be the type of people that will complain about sw's policy, thus validating my points... blah blah...

Man, I used to weigh in at a hefty 315 punds (142.9 Kg) and at a measly height of 5'4"(160Cm) I was seriously rounded. Let me tell you, Movie theaters, airplanes, and most fair rides and carnival rides were a serious embarrasment for me and as a result I wouldn't do any of those things. In my opinion, Overweight people are overweight for many more reasons than just laziness, this being said, Paying a full fair for an extra seat seems harsh and a bad business move seeing as how they are an american airliner and 60 to 70% of americans today are overweight, hence oversized. Instead, I would serously consider just having a policy of asking people if they are overweight, if they are then they get to go on a half full flight where they can freely occupy more than one seat. If they are in a rush and need to go out immediately, then they should apply their policy of full price for the one seat and the 14 day pre-order price for the other seat.
People, try to understand and accept others. Maybe one day it will be you or the demographic you fit in that people will say "american idiots" to.

you think charging extra isn't fair for the horizontally challenged... what about for the skinny guy sitting next to them?
1 scenario is where a skinny guy get to sit in window seat and there's an obese person sitting next to him... if the flight's only 1 hour or so than he could probably hold his bladder but what if it's an 8 hour flight? not to mention he's probably gonna get squeezed in his seat...and another thing... airplane's are hot inside... do u know how much an obese person can sweat? and how strong the odour is? i know coz i sat next to one in internet cafe...
u think that's fair for them to endure that in a plane? not to mention the weight limit imposed on the checked-in baggage... maybe if obese people pay for the extra weight they carry then we might be able to bring more baggage on the plane

I provided what I thought was a good alternative to the problem in my previous post. If the big person wants a flight the airline ticket counter will ask "are you overweight?" if so then you pack him or her on a semi empty flight, if not he goes on a normal flight. Also, if he wants the flight now and he is a big guy then you make him pay extra. THEN he pays extra. I feel sorry for the big people, but you are right...they are bigger.
Now on to the odor of the large people!?!? odor? Man that must be a local thing. I always showered and I never stank. Even when i was huge. Maybe in some countries where deoderant is a not so in thing, but here in the states deoderant is a great selling item. Sweat? well yeah they sweat, they have a alot more fat covering them up so therefore they would sweat more easily than most people.
Maybe because I was large I dont mind large people, but It would be a pain to have one all over me on the plane. All I am saying, is that large people don't need to be insulted. I still take it personally I guess.

just FYI... doesn't matter how often u take a shower and how much deodorant u put on... deodorant only works to mask the smell when u sweat a little but when u sweat profusely u WILL stink... specially in a confined space like airplane... GOOD GOD!! nothing's worse than a mix smell of cheap deodorant and a strong body odour... and im sorry but it's a fact that fat people sweat more and therefore have stronger smell...
Okay first, i was not being sarcastic. I was rebutting what you said. Second I AGREED with you on the sweat thing. I think you need to relax a bit phlegm_thrower. The odor thing for me is a complete waste of discussion time. ANYBODY can smell like hell. Not just big people or whatever. skinny, white, black, red, purple with yellow pokadots, or itty bitty. Anyone can stink. Now sweat, ok. Even though there are glandular issues with some people. Large people DO sweat more. Man, I apologise if I hurt your feelings with my remark, but that was not my intention. I was just commenting on what you said. I have been to france and italy and believe me when I tell you, they do not use deoderant at all. So yes they would stink too i think right? Or what? is it better to get a full aroma of a person's stink without deoderant or with deoderant. Either way it still does the same thing...stink. Again, I am sorry I insulted you, not my intent. But slow it down dude!
to get back to the subject:
bm289 - I think from what LanSite was saying the policy does work like you suggested, in that it only applies to full flights. So if someone is overweight and flying on a flight with empty seats available, they don't need to pay extra.
