ok, I just did a preview in html and it worked fine... it appears that mailto links are only active if called from within a browser.
when I went back and tested it as a standalone swf I got the same problems.

here's a page which tell you which tags are supported.

it's just html apart from you need to put \ before the " so it doesn't interpret it as end or start of a string :)

I decided to ditch all email links on our site and force users to use the PHP controled contact us form. Probably not the best choice, but definately the most cost-effective.
