Could that figure be based on the fact the average "life" sentence in america is only a few years?
You gotta figure that includes the cost of the Guards and Security features , utilities , everything not just the cable TVs and Workout facilities and Computer , etc. ;)

Concerning prisons, I think some money could be saved if we didn't lock people up for smoking plants.
Despite it being a personal choice, should a government want to limit drug use, it has been shown that medical/psychological treatment is at least 10 times more cost efficient.
Or you could mimic a communist revolution and kill all the drug users.
One way to bring the cost down is..no tvs, no computers, no workout facilities. ;)
Prison isn't supposed to be a lock-in (excuse the pun :D), it's supposed to be punishment.
A basketball goal and other activities like that is plenty for convicts, IMHO.

But you see, if we killed all the prisoners, we wouldn't need guards, and then we could get rid of thousands of jobs and save ourselves lots of money (sort of like Enron). But then, those guards would eventually turn into "money-grubbing" welfare recipients...Quote:

The founding fathers understood that governments have a nasty way of going bad...just as they needed guns for protection from their former government...the guaranteed american citizens the same right.
