Added new comments for Edge and Tera-byte. Changed Tera-Byte to its acutally address (I had it terabyte.com when it really is tera-byte.com). Updated recomendations.
Note: I removed edge-host for reason posted above. I will be adding a new review of a differen't webhost to fill its spot later on.
heres my list of free webhosts. None of them use ads on your pages. A few of them give you cgi-bin, php, mysql, ftp, etc... But those ones are harder to get accepted into. Check em out!! :D

Not to hot on replying to emails mind you, but they only cost £20.00 a year +vat (so £23.50 for me) not very feature packed, and running there own Panel but you do get Telnet access which I wanted, and theya re fine for a stop gap between hosts for a few months :)
we used to use rackspace.com who were very good, not the cheapest but definitely value for money, good support system.
but the more clients we started hosting the more we realised it would be easier to buy our own server so we did, I'd recommend it as long as you have someone that can administrate the server (we were lucky enough to know someone already managing a group of boxes in a cage on a fat pipe), the freedom of having your own hardware, being able to install what you want, is great.
Av - how much cash were you talking for that set up?
I was thinking of getting a RaQ somewhere for training purposes etc, assuming I can stump up some dosh.
Only prob I am gonna have is I want somewhere I can slap Coldfusion when I eventually buy it - if ever!!
Its all a pipe dream at the mo, but hell I've always wanted to get into hosting!
we just bought a couple of second hand boxes stripped them, fitted raid and installed unix (when I say we I mean someone that knows what they're doing :)) The cost of that is whatever you can get the box for, it was less than $1000 for us.Quote:

the monthly rental for the pipe we're sitting on is less than £200 (CAN$500) a month which is easily covered by hosting revenue. It really helps to have a good admin for the box, the guy we know is one of those guys who enjoys putting together update packages of server software or checking port scans in his spare time :)
it's sooo helpful to have a server you can do anything to, running a mail server can be a pain sometimes, but we charge accordingly so it works out.
