This is very sad. Yes, I highly doubt that use of ejectors would have been an option going that fast at that height. Also, they there speed would have probably increased before the breakup.
Lets just hope this doesn't hurt the space program. Or the ISS.

no disrespect to the above, but leave the speculation out of this convo. the truth will come out - as it did with the last shuttle tragedy over a decade ago. NASA will want the public to know why it went down.

ejector seats would have been useless, but before I was pondering that maybe a section of the shuttle could be used as a module that ejects and has parachutes. You couldn't use those parachutes at those speeds obviously but once seperated the module and any other pieces would slow to their terminal volocity.Quote:

Anyway, I saw a show that estimated that approximately 1 in 4 space shots ends in a bad way, so that being 131 for the shuttle (I think that was the number), they're still running one helluva safety record.

Unfortunately Hurricane, the bright red streak is apprently the shuttle fuel trail at it went down. No front has bright red 'heat' echoes like that. Maybe during the summer in Tornado alley. But those storms are usually isolated supercells.Quote:

I'm sure there's a very good reason. Probably something to do with structural integrity. If one largeish piece of the shuttle is nominally independent of the rest then it makes it a lot harder to create the same rigidity in the frame as you would without it, like making a car a convertible kinda, you would have to use a lot of extra support to make it rigid, most convertibles are as heavy or heavier than the roofed versions because of extra bracing.Quote:

I thought of the parachute possiblity too...but not only are they traveling at mach 18, but they are also so high the atmosphere would most likely have been to thin to be of any use.

NASA are saying do NOT touch any debris you might come across, they say it could be deadly, I wonder why that is. Radiation? Chemicals?
Also they said it is a Federal offence to disturb the debris.
Based on that, if the E-Bay item were genuine, it would be illegal to sell it.
What sort of person, within an hour of the incident thinks, "I know, I'll try and sell a bit of the shuttle on E-Bay"
