Funny, I was thinking of a Vodka Screwdriver.
I know that the reason we think of carrot is that they drill 6 into your head (5+1 through 1+5) and then ask you to say 6 like 80 times. then ask you to say the first /vegetable/ that comes to mind. Although many of us think of different vegetables, carrot is six letters long, and that's what comes out. The ones that had different stuff, weren't saying it but thinking it.
As far as the red hammer, I don't know. Beats me.
It's like the trick where you ask someone to say 'toast' 10x and then ask them what they put in the toaster - they say 'toast', of course, but it's actually bread that people put in the toaster.
Try this on your friends. If you're feeling brave.

It may be cause we both (nayades and I) have spanish as our main language, not english? we think different for sure.
It's just a matter of commonininity. Since tomatoes suddenly, by some magical forces, are no longer vedgtables, people think of carrots. If I just asked you to think of a vedgetable you would probably say carrot. Same as with a tool. A hammer is the most common tool we use.

btw.. i'm with jide.. has to do with being the most common tool and the most popular colour. the people that don't think hammer they think red, and the ones that don't think aboout red think about hammer... very very rare to find someone say green screwdriver.
