Just to reiterate the symptoms

I burn to DVD-R and this particular computer that does the burning shows a 0 bytes used / 0 bytes available unlabeled disc.
The burned DVD-R is perfectly readable in my other pc.
I can burn and read CD-R fine using windows XP.
I tried 2 kinds of discs with the same results Office Max and Memorex DVD-R.
I put in a previously burned DVD-R (not sure what I used to burn it) and it reads it.

I think I am going to try a clean uninstall reinstall of Nero and maybe try and reach their support later.
It doesn't sound like Nero. It sounds like either a driver issue or a hardware issue. Since you have another PC with a DVD drive in it...try swapping the drives. At least that will confirm if it's either a hardware/driver or a software issue.

This is a slimline drive in a notebook, the other computer is a tower / drive bay.

Oh and I did find the firmware updates... no dice.

hmmm, usually firmware updates and closing the session usually resolves this type of situation.

Strange one indeed dude. any errors in the Event Viewer pertaining your reader/writer?

You know what's bothering me? When nero is done, it pops open Explorer showing my newly burned DVD and it looks ok... the session is still open! I haven't found a way to disable that yet.

I'll check, but the burning and verification process runs error free.

You sure your'e burning the files and not testing?

On the Burn tab within the burn wizard, you should be able to set up "Finalize" with a click. also, trim down the maximum speed of your burn, and burn it at 4x and finalize the disk, uncheck Simulate, just make sure Write is checked and try again.

Via the Event Viewer, see if you have any ATAPI or something similar errors.

Seeing the list might mean simulation... sounds strange, but hey, worth a try.

Yea, like I said the burned DVD's load fine in my other computer.

a lot of times, I'd already told you to double check the cables and switch out the IDE channels; but this is a laptop, no? so those won't help.

burning down at 2x/4x might limit the amount of data on the bus; however even that might not be a solution.

But it could be a simple thing like a dirty lens to a faulty one to a bad connection to of course, the media.

I am burning at 2x.... but remember... it seems to burn ok, it's reading the burned cd that's the problem...

2 different kinds of media, they read fine in the other computer... that's the thing to remember, I believe it's burning them fine... once they are burned it doesn't read them on this computer... other computer reads them fine..

I guess it could be a dirty lense or something though...

as far as +R no, this drive is -R only.

have you tried hunting down a burned DVD that was burned on some other burner? then you could at least deduce that its all burned DVD's that dont play. and i would think you would be justified in using any warranties if they are in effect.

Yea, I have put a dvd in that was burned with this burner at one point or another... it loads fine... :confused:

thats definitely wierd. that leads me to believe the issue may be able to be resolved via some software and the way its writing the discs.
