I'm pretty sure he meant, why are people so stupid, that when you ask for art to be vector, they ask, "what's vector". You attempt to explain by saying "you know, like built in AI?". Invariably they proceed to place the raster file in Illustrator and save as.

How can you use Calculus of Variations in conjunction with Differential Geometry to create level sets of a curve in order to segment images?

oh... you forget. I'm a designer, never the client. If anything, I fix client problems; thus my answer. Which I pretty much can bet you already knew... which I thought was odd of you to ask.

And to fully answer you the first time... I feel your pain. The client does that stuff simply because they have zero clue to design other than they see the letters you asked for, send it to you, and then are amazed that you can't just hit that "Design" button that we all have in that program that they didn't install... somehow.
