[CS3] drawing a line between circles

something is getting on my nerves here...

could you just please sum up what your actual problem is- you already got lots of answers and even 3+ code examples. I even believe that your initial question from the title and or first post has already been answered.

I don't want to come across as overly harsh here but that isn't likely to happen. You have gotten quite a bit of help so far, but bear in mind you are essentially asking someone to code you a game and drop off some well commented code for you to use. To begin with, this is a pretty substantial amount of time to invest and we have no reason to code up games for every poster that comes along asking for one.

It's not because we are mean people or hate people or anything, its just that making flash games is work, some people even do this for a living, and its not something that anyone can whip up in a few minutes for another person.

We have no problem telling you how to acomplish what you are looking for, but I am not going to write the code and I doubt many other people here will either.

Its a little hard to explain but I would do it something like this:

You may also want to store a flag for each circle to know if it has already been "used".

Ok my problem was that I used the code that mr_malee gave me but I didnt understand it so I was hoping some one else could post a better code that I could understand but after playing around/rewriting mr_malee's code I think I finally understand it and have got it to work, I think.

I will play around some more with the code.

ok I have got the code to work but how would I make it so the circles can only be clicked once, so once they have been clicked they become disabled so they cannot be clicked again. I tried removing the click event listeners for the circles but no matter where i put the code to remove the click events it removes them straight away and the circels cannot be clicked at all. How would I remove the event listeners once the circles have been clicked.

Give them a 'clicked' variable, make it do anything only if its false,after the first click set it to true
And you should really make pong first.

I have but that was 2 years ago and it was using actionscript 2 not 3 and anyways what does pong have to do with my game?

the events method is the best way to go. I've made two extra functions "enableCircle" and "disableCircle" which do what they say. Disabling removes the event and hides the handCursor to make it a little better visually.

Where were you putting the removeEventListener before?

Well Ive already created pong but that was in actionscript 2. I started using actionscrip 2 two years ago but I have only started using actionscript 3 this year so all the actionscript is kinda new to me.

I put the removeEventListeners inside the circleClick function but then it removes all the events as soon as I click on any circle and then none of the circles can be clicked. I also tried putting the removeEventListeners at the end of the code outside the function but the same thing happens. I did manage to get it to work eventually after playing around for a while but I dont think the way I did it is very good. I Created another eventListener for each circle and then told it that when the circle is clicked remove the original eventListener for that circle. If you dont get what I mean Here is what I did.

I did this for each circle and it works but the problem is that I need to do this for every circle and so if I had say 10 circles I would need to write this code 10 times for each circle. Could I do it this way or would it be better doing it another way?

Ok I think I managed to get it to work. I had to put event.currentTarget before the remove eventListener.

I have tested it a number of times and once any circle has been clicked one it cannot be clicked again. I also added a trace to display Circle Is Clicked so I could see if the circles where bieng clicked or not.

How could I make it so that if the line is touching/hitting another line it will not be drawn.

It seems like you need to take some time to learn some fundamental skills to be able to solve this problem yourself.

Ok I have look around on the internet and found some websites to do with line intersection but I still dont understand. could someone help me with the code. this is all I need and then I can start making the game. There are a few other things I want to add to the game but I will work thoes out later I just want to get this line intersection working so I can strat the game so can somes please help me I am so close.

Have a little trouble following your code but why do you do c1 and c2

Cant you just do

line1.graphics.moveTo(clickedCircles[i].x, clickedCircles[i].y);
line1.graphics.lineTo(clickedCircles[i].x, clickedCircles[i+1].y);

also you will want a way to make multiple lines that arent all called line1. Perhaps make another array for the lines

and whats the point of the for loop and clickedCircles.length - 1;

you click 2 circles so clickedCircles.length - 1 = 1 EDIT

sorry if I don't understand :|

youre probably gonna want to make your own class for a circle so you can store the information like color better.

so when you click a circle, it adds the circle to an array and its color to another array which only holds 2 items. Then each time you click, you check if the two colors in the array are the same and if they are, you draw a line between the 2 circles in the other array using the x and y coordinates and also remove the event listeners from these 2 circles.

I go that code off mr_malee so I cant realy answer your questions. All that code works so I am going to leave it the way it is.

I just want ot know how to make it so it will not draw a line when it intersects another line.
