For me the "game over weekend" competition will be the best fit..!
Can we hear ideas for the next weekend and maybe we can setup a kind of voting system for games? I think "Anybody can vote" feature can be an interesting touch :D
Also I think the winner should choose the idea for the next weekend competition, or at least choose from all the participants the winning idea!

I think open sourcing the work is a great idea, but it may have to be optional as some people may not have anywhere to host the code / assets ( Unless someone can offer or point to some cheap / easy hosting ).
Shared assets have been brought up before, and it never works. There's no one to actually do them. Visuals aren't that big a deal, in 48 hours no one will be able to code a nice game and make it look great no matter how good they are.
The whole idea of the 48 hours is that it makes for a level playing field. That should be the only restriction as such.
So:
* pseudobot you up for running this then mate ? It's your baby
* Are we doing a game or as render suggested just some nice game related stuff ( Although they should be more of a 24 hour thing, quickest pathFinder for example ) ?
* If it is a game, pseudobot I'd suggest you start a new thread for random words ( Everyone offers up 2 words for the the theme ) once the days it's going to run over are nailed down.

^Im not really shure about running it, as I'm a pretty new time member here.
I often have school stuff aswell, so the weekly thing wouldn't work out, unless I somehow [miraculously] found the time to do it all. I think it would be better if some old-time member, who is allready repsected across the site, would start of the competitions.
I would start of with a game, since new/old flashers can participate in it.

Thats actually a great idea! everybody says exactly 2 [theme] words in there post, and then me [or someone else] just puts it in 2 arrays, get the maxlength for both, generates 2 unique random numbers, then does a quick trace with the 2 numbers in the arrays.

I agree with Wes. I think everyone would have to make their own graphics, and everything else. That's the aim of the comps I think, to see how good you can do within the given time limit. Also I agree about not making mandatory for the games to be open source, so there's the possibility to get the game sponsored or something like that.

Giving something back this comminty (for the help, tutorials, links,...) isn´t that bad either or ;) - just taking and no sharing is a bit 1 sided imo.Quote:

In my opinion, all the projects should go Open Source, so people can learn new things, and of course so people can edit/use it as much as they want. Kind of like Th Gnu Public license.
This is a great idea! I used to be part of a great little forum that did weekly animation, illustration and actionscripting competitions, and every week the entries just got better and better. It's a great way to encourage interaction among forum members old and new.
I'd be willing to organize the weekly event if nobody else wants to take the task :)
Ok, no problem with that. That would be something good too. I just thought having to finish a game within a time limit is also a good motivation for one to have something wrapped up and then get something for it if you want. For me there's no problem with sharing the code, just was expressing my point. I also do this for the joy ;) and I like to give back of what I know everytime I can. And of course that will be much help for me as I'll learn new stuff.Quote:

Besides the learn factor imo. sharing the informations from behind the scenes would tie better the community together instead of everyone doing just his/ her own stuff.

This would be good, never did participate in any of the 48hr comps - I regret that.
It should be run from the boards, have a sticky with links to each monthly comp thread to it make them easy to find later.

Because if you have all the comps in the one thread get a bit tedious. Would love to see this up and running.
If they are every month I would surely get a chance to enter. Would be cool to see one month people get into groups of 2 to produce things. Not sure how well that would work for 48hr's though.
With any shared code/assets we should remember that people use different versions or AS and Flash:
* MX2004 or earlier with AS1
* F8 with AS1
* F8 with AS2
* F9 with AS1/2
* F9 with AS3
* Flex with AS3
* F10?
^Maybe state the version of actionscript + version of flash that you enterd, so other people know if the *fla would run on their version of flash?
Anyway, any version of flash should be legible to enter, although Im not sure about other things like Swift 3d, and others...
just provide the exported or rendered swf/ spritesheet/ music/ sound,... or anything else that doesn´t go directly into FLash.
As far as I know nobody of this forum section uses koolmoves or any other hobbiest flash software to create their master flash movie - so any exotic formats are propably unlikely.
I expect that 60+ % will use Flash AS1 alone, a few others AS3 with external assets and others between that.

I don't know anybody who codes in AS1 anymore... :) On the other hand, I live in Romania! Hahahahah!
people that say that they code in AS2 often use a code pattern often used in Flash 5, MX. I dont know many people that use classes in AS2 - so real AS2
from this perspective, yes - true! I myself am trying to move to a class structure way of programming but I must say that I don't really see the benefits.. I mean I think I just get used to find my way on flash mc's and buttons and it seems more natural to leave it like this... But as I want to use AS3 OOP seems to be the word to handle :d

It's not that intensive. I'd really recommend you read up on beatcows posts when he ran these comps. He did a fantastic job and didn't get dragged into anything much.
If you can start a couple of threads ( "Give me your random word", "What dates good for you", "It beings now" ) then it'll run itself.
( Take this thread as an example )
I know I'm being a bit pushy about you doing it, but I'm a firm believer of if someone has a good idea they should be able to run with it. This is your idea mate, and it's good one, and I'd like to see you run this.
If it's really not possible then fair enough, but have a think first, it won't be that much work on your behalf, everyone is having a debate around you as it is, you just pick what the majority want ( So looking at it so far, open source, a game, 48 hours ).

I think there are other ways to give back rather than just giving everything away. My concern personally is that I have a lot of code base that I have built up over a long time that I would like to use if I want to make a nice game, but I don't want to put them out there for just anyone to take and use for their own selfish purposes. It's basically the same thing as someone stealing your game and putting their own ads in it, except you're just trying to force everyone to allow people to steal their stuff. I like to answer questions and things and help people, but that doesn't mean I want to just *give* everybody everything, so people can start coming back asking questions with my mutilated code that they have copy/pasted together to try to get a game from it without having any idea what they're doing.
Also I think trying to get pseudobot to run it is silly when plenty of other people seem to actually *want* to run it, and have offered already.
Those are my opinions
Anyways I can compromise on that issue if I have to. It's just that this is more of a philosophy issue, and I don't see why we can't have a nice contest without needing to get all political about it and force everybody to think the same way. Why can't people share when/if they want to, and not share when/if they don't want to.
