Game challenge #8 has Started!!

Attached is the engine! :)
And I think there's an example with it also...
(rotation functions don't work, and I have no idea why!!!)

I'll make a documentation for it after the challenge (right now I need to concentrate on that...)

Actually, this competition is getting really annoying! I automatically but a semicolon after the brackets up there ^^^...and I keep pressing Ctrl+S to "save" when I pause from typing this response. All part of the game! :)

(Actually...sadly I haven't even started my game...I made 2 songs, and just screwed around...can't seem to get a good idea... :(...I just kept coding my 3d engine)

Anyway, for your game idea, just play a few flash shmups, and then you basically have your ideas....in about 15 minutes, will having a bit of fun aswell. Good luck!

The problem is, this is subjective.I mean, how can someone knows if his class is allowed or not because what is a advantage for one may be normal for other
Also i dont think number of lines being a good criteria because one can do things like that with only 25 lines
And also, if it is to make everything from scratch you will only solve the same problems you had before creating the same class again, i mean, if you has solved it before you already have one kind of advantage one way or another

^Yeah, you are right about that. Maybe I should have started with everything a bit more planned out. Anyway, for now small classes are allowed.

Well, I might not be entering this one, but I still want to say a thing or two about how this competition is shaping up. It may as well contribute to a good competition the next time I do enter.

Last comp I used a grid to reduce the amount of collision checks I'd written the day before. It's a simple class but if just one thing is wrong everything throws an error so it was hard to debug. In the end I worked on that class for about 5 hours. I read about the start of the competition about 8 hours after it started. I figured that I wouldn't start from scratch but that it would be fair game as I didn't use all the time. In the end I submitted it somewhat early, giving me a feeling of not having disadvantaged anyone. Before you use something like a 3d engine think a second: how much time did I spent on it. If it's more then a day you can definitly scratch it for the competition. Opensourcing it before the competition is not an option. You understand your code completely and don't need to read into it and experiment it, you've already got a game designed which could actually use your classes... there probably are more reasons but I think those are the most important ones.


Why all these troubles about what's allowed pop up this time comes weird to me. It feels a bit like the opensource versus not opensource discussion of last competition. Actually every entry was opensourced in the end. I get the impression this is all about the competition and making a top-notch game. Do you make a top-notch game in 72 hours? I don't. Do I like to step up to a challenge with my fellow flash devellopers and do "the best I can" in 72 hours? I do.

But how is it bad sportsmanship?

Yes, I may be partly responsible for not knowing if I was allowed my classes or not, but if I provided them, and further more there's an example file (my test file), and also the classes are commented to guide the user through quite quickly. The only part I recommend SKIPPING is my render function, since that is truly intense, and it's got clipping built-in, so the code gets pretty long...

By my thoughts, I think it's fairly easy to learn my engine. Then again:

How long have I worked on it? WELL...that would be VERY hard to determine, since I got my first ideas on 3d back in Spring, not knowing a thing about it, then I started to look through the net, and found my now holy, 3d Projection wikipedia page, and also a kirupa tutorial. Anyways, I won't say all the details, but I'll just say that the classes I posted were written a couple weeks ago, and I'm still updating them, fixing them, etc.!!!

Nevermind though. I'm not going to use my 3d engine this time anyways, since it would be pointless to without having rotation functions that work...

I think i said it before, its just that you then will have to make the same class you did before from scratch, and you kinda of already know what will work well for that.Using or not you already have an advantage.

hey pseudo I'll have to pass, I finsihed the design of the gameplay and characters but, I'm totally out of time, next year.

Well both arguments seem right. One way I see competitions though is to push a developer to come up with an idea and complete something, while being constrained by a limited amout of time. I see the competitions as inspiration. Working under pressure helps me spring new ideas quickly. I don't see it as having to stick to the actual theme of the topic, even though my idea sort of incorporates it. The idea for my game entry is a side spark after seeing the topic and trying to come up with something original. Now I'm only bending it around the theme given.

Well, so much for me participating in the competition. An unexpected job came up, and I though I could juggle the 2 projects...but...time wasn't on my side (Had to go out and get a christmas tree too...)

Sorry guys! I'm pissed at myself actually...could've gotten a few more hours in...but whatever...there's always next time...right?
(How soon will it be, since if it's right after christmas, and still during the holidays, then I could definitely participate!)

1) Pick a better timing next time
2) No genre, too limiting
3) Make sure everyone is free

^No, still 21 hours left. But really there are, like, 2 people competing (me and xploder). But thanks for your coment on teh particles, I just figured out how to do them yesterday (while playing Geometry wars on teh DS). One note though: They look way nicer in real time, and miraculously not even 100 particles at once slow the frame rate down on my mac [which has 733 MHZ, plus it's a mac flash player]

if there's no genre limiting, people will submit anything they already started, genre limiting is the best way control that everyone starts at the same time.
