i think during katrina the looting was more a crime of necessity. Lots of people were without food/shelter/water, so they had to take what they could to survive.

yup, because all of the looting during katrina was of the electronic variety.
Not everyone went into Walmart and stole ipods, a lot of people stole food, clothing, water. all thing essential to survival.
But feel free to post more pictures ala fox news which proves your point but neglects any other options.

Looting isn't a crime of necessity. Sure, some people stole food, et al. But looting is all about stealing. Nothing more, nothing less.
My post was not about whether or not people are going to panic/riot/loot if an asteroid hits earth, it was whether or not we are planning for it, and how likely it is to happen. When the air force finds it useful to practice that, then there's got to be something in it. An asteroid hitting earth is one of the few natural disasters that could strike within a couple of days, and which we can actually do something about, if we spend the money on it now. In fact, we don't need a lot of money to prepare for an asteroid impact. Yes, many of the things he mentions in that video is pretty strange and seem unlikely, and are difficult to solve, but compare that to the asteroid attack and how simple the solution for that is, and over how short a period it's going to happen. For example, the poles switching place is going to takes years, maybe hundreds or thousands of years. A solar flare is not going to destroy us is a day, but an asteroid is.
If there's a chance to loot... I missed Katrina, I missed the LA riot looting... I'm looting this time.

I'm collecting people's opinions about what will happen on this particular date and if you are interested take a minute and visit the poll.
There are so many theories about this date already, but personally I think that most of them are let's say pretty impossible...
Now there is a movie (2012) that will commercialize this topic even more but I think that there is a chance something to happen for real.

I think.. it'll turn into 21st December 2012 will turn into.... 22nd December 2012.
The same thing that happened on y2k...nothing...I'm sure there will be a few riots and people hoping that something spectacular/catastrophic happen (because nothing else ever happens to give them some excitement/change), but, other than that, I think any planet altering changes will be more gradual...but, I'm still going to see the movie this weekend. :)
I predict there will be a lot of people who feel disappointed and/or foolish... and life will go on...
