oh boy. looks like the end is approaching quicker than expected. wow.
QuinStreet Inc. purchased several WebMediaBrands holdings at the beginning of the year, including Flash Kit, which is a good thing since QuinStreet is the leader in online direct marketing and has been in business since 1999. Really nothing other then that has changed so certainly no reason for alarm and we look forward to seeing whatever changes or enhancements that QuinStreet will look to implement in the months ahead.
In regards to David and gerbick no longer wishing to remain as part of the Flash Kit Team, clearly it is a sad thing since they have both given so much to community over the years, however all things change and as others have mentioned, this does open the door for other members to fill those and other important seats within the Flash Kit community.
This exodus is saddening but I can't exactly say I didn't see it coming. FK as an entire site has changed little in the ways that it needs to. From a member perspective, there is a hurtful lack of modernity which is virus in nature to the entire experience. That's mainly why I've never sought to be a moderator. From a developers perspective, if I were consulting on the site, I'd have to recommend a complete reboot which I rarely if ever suggest.
The owners who pay for and profit from this site need to outsource a long hard look at the sites metrics and consider the cost of re-working it against the lost revenue of leaving it as is. Further, I bet a solid team could be derived from the CL alone to handle the workload since they more intimately are aware of what's missing.
Purely opinion considering I'm not privy to the stats. But aside from the boards, there's a whole other sites worth of content. I'm really not sure of how often or to what depth that hemisphere is used. All I know is it turned me off a long time ago. Board-wise, all you need to do is look at stackoverflow to see some of the features we're missing.
Well that is a certainly a matter of opinion (whether having a leader in online direct marketing owning OUR community is a good thing).
If it stops us from talking about what we want to talk about, then they are basically treating us like greyhounds, happy to make money out of our races, but making sure we wear a muzzle so we can't bite them sometimes when they treat us like crap
...I don't do muzzles.
When the owners of the site treat supermoderators with the disregard that these new owners have done, and start removing their posts and threatening to ban them if they don't toe the line (I don't do line-toeing either), then it is just intolerable to me and shows a complete lack of regard for what is actually good for the members here.
I am nobody's cash cow.

...and to all the people who have expressed concern about my departure...as I said early on, it does not mean I will not post in the future, it just means I will no longer be in a position to use any influence I might have had with the site administrators, nor be able to speak out on the members' behalf.
Good luck to them in finding 2 supermods who can do what gerbs or I have done for the community in the past 10 years.

David, you know that I have the utmost respect for you and your service to the community over the years, but unfortunitly I wont be able to condone moving the discussion from the private team room, to the public forum. As I stated in the team room, the discussion is over and the expectation is that moderators will enforce the AUP. I would ask that you not force my hand by continuing discussing the decisions that were made behind the scenes of the community or to further any disruptions to the community by such continued discussions. If you wish to move the discussion to some other forum, then you are welcome to do so but if it continues here, then I will have no choice but to end it. I hope you can understand my position in this situation.
Thanks
Planet, I didn't start this thread to bring private debate into the public
...on review, your posts are more responsible for that than mine. I am happy to not talk about admin anymore, and continue to have this thread as my explanation to my community as to why I felt I could not serve their best interests anymore and express my thanks for their support over the years.
...but if you feel you need to close this thread, go ahead.
david
No problem at all. I would prefer to keep it open and provide you with your much earned and owed opportunity for you to discuss your future plans and the like, so long as we leave it at that and not as a venue for looking back.
Thanks again.
I think there's been a discussion about that at least once a year in the CL. What I took out of it is that fk is not interested at all. FK is a business and money is their goal, not people (that's why there's more ads than content and they don't care bothering their longtime faithful members with things like those annoying adwords they just implemented [although I still haven't seen any, probably because they are served by location]). Little has changed, and from my point of view, little will.
New members will come, fk will continue to have traffic, will continue to make money. And one thing will remain constant: those who've been here and contributed to make FK what it is today will continue leaving (there are many many many users that have left fk disappointed).
I think all of the regulars in the CL (and probably other forums) already have new favorite sites and resources we visit daily...we continue visit FK for the nostalgia and because it's hard to find the people we find here anywhere else (really, silverx, jaquan, LR, genesis, wannabe, gerbick, hanratty, etc)...to me, flashkit stopped being useful years ago.
I don't want to hijack this thread as its purpose is more important but I will reply to your post. I personally don't have a problem with a free site showing lots and lots of ads. I just think the design and layout is dated and horrid. I also know much if not all of the site is not subject to change due to ancient db's and a pile of security band-aids. I want FK to make money because it aint coming from me. I just think making it easier for those who make this site great would attract more consistent users hence my suggestion for an audit.
Its worth starting a new thread so as to not detract from the larger issue unfolding in this one.
gerbs, it is a very difficult thing to do and I don't know about you, but I feel crappy about it ...but I had no choice.
I have too many memories of what this community was like in the early, pre-corporate times, when Mark Fennell (flashkit) was still running the boards, and even during the first transition year when the corporation had purchased the forums.
There was a time when the team lounge really was legendary.
david
I think this could be an improvement for Flashkit.
It's not like these guys can't still post and contribute if they want.
